Marketing Manager - PR and Social Media Specialist

We need someone to help us tell our stories. As the person responsible for PR and social media, you will work closely with communications colleagues across the globe to tell our story in a manner that is authentic, credible and memorable. The ideal candidate will possess a deep love for great storytelling, demonstrate strategic thinking, and exude a professional confidence. A successful track record in media relations, copy writing and a deep understanding of social media are a must. The candidate should also have a proven ability to think on their feet and effectively influence cross-group teams.


  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualifications in communications, business, journalism or a similar field.
  • Extensive and proven experience in communications or journalism. Media training or similar experience a definite plus.
  • Experience devising strategic media communications plans.
  • Excellent written and overall communications skills.
  • Able to transpose often deeply technical information into a story relevant for differing audiences.
  • Confidence, agility and an ability to work across teams and build relationships with all levels.
  • Understanding of the modern influencer landscape.
  • Familiarity with (or ability to quickly learn) the overall story and brand tenets.
  • A proven track record of cross-group collaboration and comfort navigating through large, matrixed organisations.

Key Accountabilities

  • Point of contact for all media enquiries in the lab - developing key relationships and managing reactive responses.
  • Partners with our marketing team to create an agile strategic communications plan.
  • Partners with in-house resources, in the UK and globally to help create compelling PR stories for exploitation via traditional and social media, bloggers and other influencers.
  • Manages our news calendar to help drive consistent and timely messages to the market, balancing a local agenda with that of the broader business storytelling agenda.
  • Counsels and supports business stakeholders in building the right plans/tactical execution in support of our work in the lab.
  • Delivers PR and social media training programmes internally.
  • Anticipates and helps to mitigate potential issues and crises.

  • Ability to seek out social and traditional media opportunities to help amplify our stories, and contribute value to other stories across the business
  • Gains respect and viewed as an excellent partner to the team that this role supports and networks with.
  • Takes a highly collaborative approach to PR and communications, including the ability to resolve conflict and ambiguity to craft a one story with external resonance.


  • Frequent travel to Cambridge & London required. May involve occasional European and international travel.
