A fantastic opportunity to work with a very well known University on the outskirts of Swindon has arisen for an experienced Health & Safety Officer to support the commercial services director in a new and exciting position at a time of change. 

This is initially a 6 month contract as the role is likely to expand - It is with a view this will become a permanent position.

The Job 

Main duties and responsibilities

• The pro-active development of health and safety policies and procedures, for all aspects of the University’s work, including the University Farms, in consultation with other staff of the University, to ensure that the University is able to legally comply with relevant legislation in this field.

• Carrying out a programme of audits, providing high quality advice and guidance to staff and students that monitors and ensures compliance with the legislation and the University’s Health and Safety policies, for which the designated members of staff are responsible for.

• The promotion and maintenance of a comprehensive risk assessment procedure across the University, based on local risk assessments undertaken by relevant members of staff, providing training on the system and monitoring the quality of the risk assessments uploaded;

• Lead proactive initiatives to improve the health and safety culture of the University and work alongside managers and staff to ensure that local management of health and safety (in departments of the University) is implemented effectively.

• Establishing, maintaining contact and acting as a link with external agencies in this field, such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Occupational Health Service providers, the Fire Authority and University Health and Safety Officers network;

• Undertaking health and safety audits, as guided by the University’s Health and Safety Committee, providing follow up support to address any issues that may arise from such audits.

• Maintaining accident and near miss statistical records, investigating the causes of accidents or near misses, writing detailed reports (including maintaining evidence logs) drafting RIDDOR or other reports as required, liaising with University insurers and senior managers as necessary. Ensuring that improvements where required, are implemented to prevent re occurrence, in liaison with other departments of the University;

• Co-ordinating and assisting with the delivery of health and safety training for University Staff and relevant students (e.g. students about to go on placement, induction and training for postgraduate students and induction and training for undergraduates)

• Working with the University HR team and the occupational health service to ensure that appropriate health screening systems are in place in key areas of the University

• In association with the Laboratory Manager, providing specialist advice on hazards associated with laboratory procedure, chemical and gases

• Advising on Farms specific related health and safety matters on the University Farms and Rural Innovation Centre, ensuring that health and safety practices are effectively implemented;

The Person 

To be considered for this position the successful candidate will possess the following: 

• Possess (as a minimum) a NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent professional health and safety qualification recognised in the UK;

• Previous experience of providing a comprehensive and pro-active health and safety service to an employer (preferably in an HE or research organisation environment);

• Previous experience in the development of health and safety policies and procedures, health and safety auditing and health and safety training;

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills

• Possession of a full, current driving licence

• Evidence of continued CPD training

• Excellent IT skills including experience in the use of Microsoft Office products and the SHE database confidently and competently.

• Evidence of effective organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and to work under pressure with a keen attention to detail.
