Purpose of the role
• Support the Commercial Finance Manager with analysis of current trends to help forecast/drive future performance focusing on both Revenue and Costs
• Play a key role in analysing quarterly billings/revenue to support the forecasting process across the product portfolio
• Responsibility for the analysis of overhead cost areas, ensuring cost center owners are supported throughout the monthly reporting cycle and quarterly forecasting process.
• Producing and innovating monthly reporting to serve internal customers as well as meet the reporting requirements of the finance team.

Key result areas
Performance management: 60%
• Assisting in the preparation of the monthly management/group reporting packs
• Overhead analysis of the business cost structure focusing on understanding the underlying cost base and providing monthly reporting of actuals and trend analysis to both Finance and Business stakeholders
• Leveraging the analysis performed within Finance to provide Business owners with detailed, forward-looking insight that highlights business opportunities/risks and their anticipated effect on full-year cost
• Establish and track sets of agreed KPIs that provide a clear snapshot and balanced view of overall business performance
• As part of the finance team identify the courses of action necessary to enhance favorable trends or mitigate risks, incorporating the financial effect of business decisions into budgets, forecasts and operating plans and tracking outcomes against agreed measurement criteria on a monthly basis.
• Participate in monthly meetings with publishers/editors from within the Legal business/Cost center owners, to communicate positive/negative variances and ensure that there is full visibility and transparency of all monthly movement.
• Liaise with Group Finance in the US ensuring local issues are understood at a global level.
Budgets, forecasts and operating plans 40%
• Assist in the production of quarterly forecasts and annual budgets within agreed timeframes for the Legal business, leveraging cost trends and balance sheet metrics compiled by the Finance team
• Compile budget and forecast packs, evaluating current run-rates, anticipating trends, key deliverables and opportunities/risks
• In conjunction with the wider finance team, help develop consistent/standardised reporting packs including P&Ls, relevant underlying performance metrics and detailed assessment of key opportunities/risks.
• Develop pragmatic and practicable cost drivers for assigned business areas, as a basis for driving increasingly realistic budgets and forecasts

As the Financial Analyst your skills and experience will ideally include:
• Either started an accountancy qualification or wanting to
• Ability to confidently articulate the story that the numbers are telling to non-finance people
• Self-starter with questioning tenacious mentality
• Confident personality, who is comfortable taking ownership of tasks through to completion
• Must be comfortable working with ambiguity in a cross-functional, fast-moving and rapidly changing environment
• Must have strong analytical skills with knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Working knowledge of PeopleSoft, Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System (Hyperion Planning and Reporting) and Essbase would be an advantage
• Desirable to have experience in the print/online publishing industry or other subscription-based businesses
