Would you like to work in a small, enthusiastic development team?

We are looking for a Senior Web Developer to join our friendly, proactive team which is within the University of Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility. This in an exciting opportunity to lead the development of our existing software platform including modernizing our development tools and techniques.

Our main system is used by over 40 clinical research facilities across the UK and Ireland, and there are several new large developments for which you would help provide technical direction.

In this role you would be responsible for review of technical solutions and architecture for all CRF web development projects. You would develop our core system which is built using the .net framework with an SQL server database. Technically, your knowledge will be up to date with the latest web technologies.

This post is based in the Western General Hospital, in Edinburgh, but will involve occasional travel to sites across Edinburgh and around the UK and Ireland.

We anticipate interviews will be held across 29th and 30th March and 5 April.

This post is offered on a full-time (35 hours per week), open-ended basis.

Here is the job description:

Main Responsibilities

1. Employ high-quality technical analysis and design skills to produce pragmatic technical solutions and deliver high-quality web applications to the CRF and its many external clients. Working within .Net framework skills required for this include JavaScript, C#, XSLT, CSS, HTML5, SQL and XML. All developments must be completed according to documented CRF IT standards and following the CRF IT Security Policy. Detailed test plans must be written for development work. (60% of role)

2. Provide technical leadership for CRF developers, such as peer review of code and assistance with technical problems, to ensure successful project delivery and to assist with staff development. Promote a collaborative team by sharing knowledge and working closely together. Keep up to date with technical developments to ensure our development tools best meet our requirements.(15% of role)

3. Update and develop our Standard Operating Procedures and policy and provide guidance for the team following current industry best practice. (10% of role)

4. Liaise and communicate effectively with CRF partners and clients to ensure the smooth running of technical projects(10% of role)

5. Provide direct support for IT Manager to ensure successful project outcomes such as providing estimates and technical input for large pieces of work and for change request prioritisation. Deputise for IT Manager during holiday or unplanned absence. (5% of role)

Planning and Organising

- Estimate, plan and manage technical work required for delivery of multiple projects
- Work with CRF IT Manager to plan the overall CRF IT project workload
- Coordinate the activities of technical staff to meet agreed deliverables

Problem Solving

- Design solutions for key projects.
- Solve technical design and implementation problems encountered.
- Generalise solutions to maximise re-use of code
- Prioritise and resolve technical queries from internal and external clients promptly.

- Exercise initiative when providing consultancy to external clients and users.

Decision Making

- Make most major system architecture decisions on technical projects and significant design and implementation decisions.
- Decide on prioritisation of own workload requirements across projects, balancing workload with client support.
- Decide on project scope and timing in collaboration with the IT manager.

Key Contacts/Relationships

- Liaise with Lothian NHS and University of Edinburgh clients and a growing number of external academic clients across the UK and Ireland to demonstrate our systems, manage installation and provide support of our systems
- Represent the CRF at national and international conferences and CRFManager® development and user group meetings which could include providing demonstrations and leading or participating in key meetings.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job

Technical Skills Required

- Web Application Development skills, particularly working within the .Net web framework with JavaScript, C#, XML, T-SQL, HTML, CSS and XSLT.
- Database programming skills, particularly ability to write triggers, stored procedures, functions, design and build new schemas.
- Database interrogation skills, ideally including the ability to write queries in SQL or other SQL based database languages.

General Skills Required

- Degree or diploma in any technical or clinical area, or equivalent experience.
- The job requires technical excellence. The job-holder will have taken part in many successfully-completed projects and will have taken a leading role in bringing about those successes.
- Determination and drive to complete projects and overcome any technical complexity
- Essential for the post holder to be a team player and want to share their knowledge and experience with the team.
- Ability to plan and prioritise a busy and demanding workload
- Attention to detail
- A good understanding and interest in web application security to ensure this is implemented to best practice.

- Mastery of object orientated programming and writing reusable libraries.
- Ability to write clean, readable and easily maintainable code.
- Ability to refactor code and optimise legacy code.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to convey information in a clear, concise manner to users, team, or senior staff.

Desirable Skills

- Knowledge of ISO27001 and or Information Governance Toolkit (NHS)
- Knowledge of clinical research management and regulations
- Windows server setup experience and knowledge of web server security
- Working practice of both waterfall and Agile development methodologies

Dimensions

- The job-holder provides technical leadership for all major CRF web applications, which includes CRFManager®: CRFManager® support thousands of staff across 40 sites in the UK and Ireland.
- The post-holder provides technical leadership, internal and external, on these projects.
- The post-holder has responsibility to design, develop and support top-quality, MHRA-compliant web applications.
- This post will involve limited travel around the UK, Ireland and potentially further afield to collect requirements, review prototypes and attend the UKCRF annual conference. The post will be based at the Western General Hospital, but will be expected to carry out some work at other local sites.
- There will be the requirement to provide emergency support cover over holiday periods. (rare to get any issues)
