The Data Analyst has responsibility for analysing technical data within the Asset Management Group, working with large and complex datasets to support effective decision making in the field of infrastructure asset management.

You will be part of a team which develops software for decision support tools and asset management systems, primarily in although knowledge of other languages such as C/C# would be desirable.

You would be working from TRL's head office in Wokingham, Berkshire, with occasional need to travel to client sites. In addition, TRL installs and implements its asset management systems for a number of international clients, so there would be a requirement for occasional overseas travel as part of a project implementation team.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

- Responsibility for analysing and updating a range of data sources - whether structured, unstructured or big data - relating to physical and economic aspects of infrastructure assets, with a particular focus on the highway and rail sectors.
- Develop software tools primarily in to support effective decision making in relation to the construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and economic performance of infrastructure assets.
- Work closely with clients and colleagues to capture data analysis and reporting requirements, identify relevant data sources, and carry out software development and testing within our quality management framework to meet the clients' needs.
- Work to expand the capability and improve the performance of existing models.
- Help the wider Asset Management team to identify commercial opportunities through the analysis and exploitation of data.
- Produce reports and presentations for clients and elevate the broader impact of findings (where appropriate) to other Groups / Divisions and TRL's Academy.

Skills & Experience


- Expertise in capturing and documenting user and functional requirements. Strong analytical and organisational skills
- Accomplished skills in producing, testing and managing the life-cycle of software in .The ability to learn and apply knowledge to new topics and areas of work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong presentation skills are desirable.
- Knowledge of other languages - especially C/C# would be advantageous.
- Broad understanding and previous experience of applying data analysis techniques.
- A degree (2.1) or above in a science, computing or engineering discipline.


- Previous experience within the civil engineering / asset management domain
- Previous experience in a project lead role.
- Membership of a professional body and / or a higher degree or technical qualification.

Communication Requirements:

Eligible candidates must be able to demonstrate fluency in both verbal and written English, as the role demands a high level of communication with clients and the output of detailed written reports.
