Financial Controller

We are looking to recruit a permanent stand-alone Financial Controller to strengthen our clients management team. Reporting directly to the board, you will be responsible for looking after everything from the transactional aspects of accounts to management reporting, with the assistance of a purchase ledger team of two.

The ideal candidate will have performed a similar role within an SME and will possess an innovative and proactive nature.

Hours: 9.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday

Key direct responsibilities:

· Prepare monthly management accounts and reports

· Produce cash flow statements & reconcile current account bank statements

· Reconcile balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis

· Maintain fixed asset register & process depreciation journals

· Manage VAT returns - producing quarterly returns, submit to HMRC & make payments

· Process monthly journals incl. accruals, prepayments & VAT charges

· Manage regular stock checks, process monthly stock journals & control aged stocks

· Attend regular management meetings with MD & CD - incl. producing finance agenda, monthly forecasts

· Work with the MD to manage the investment, treasury & foreign currency sourcing function

· Manage the payroll function, including monitoring and HMRC submissions

· Be the key contact for annual external audit and regulatory visits

· Continuous improvement of financial systems & processes

Additional shared responsibilities:

· Oversee recruitment & onboarding process

· Liaise with internal and external resources for HR and HSEQ

· Liaise with external consumer credit providers and insurers

Essential skills:

· Relevant recent experience working in a similar role in the SME sector - ideally in retail

· Qualified or part qualified status with AAT/ACA/ACCA/CIMA or be qualified by experience with a proven track record within SMEs

· Strong technical accounting skills

· Excellent interpersonal communication and organisational skills

· In-depth knowledge of Excel and a preparedness to learn a proprietary EPOS/Accounts platform

· The ability to work unaided, using your own initiative

· The ability to manage your time/workload with confidence and efficiency

Desirable skills:

· Team/people management skills

· Experience of giving training/guidance in similar role

· The ability to accept and work with change
