John Crane’s Gas Seals Development team in Slough is seeking to recruit a Development Test Technician / Engineer to join the company on a permanent basis.
The roles will form an integral part of the Gas Seals Research & Development business unit – a team of highly innovative and resourceful engineering subject matter experts - and will be responsible for developing, testing and validating new Gas Seal products. The individual would also be responsible for Gas Seal Development test rigs, and the build and test areas in terms of working practices, housekeeping and general safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Developing, testing and validating new Gas Seal products as part of the Product Dev team, in accordance with business goals;
• Joint responsibility for the Gas Seal Development, build and test areas in terms of working practices, housekeeping and general safety. Specific responsibility for the Gas seal test rig #2 including, upgrades, diagnosis, planned maintenance and reliability improvement, also other test rigs as appropriate;
• Seal preparation, assembly and build. Test cell build, seal installation, setting up of test rig and dynamic testing of dry gas seals. The setup and use of specialist equipment - gap probes / acoustic probes. Downloading, logging and storage of test data, drawing graphs + interpretation and analysis of data;
• Strip, inspection and analysis of seals and associated parts. Assisting with failure investigations, diagnosis and problem solving when development tests go wrong. Occasional development and writing up of reports and new procedures / standards as required;
• Ensuring that jobs are executed on time and to the appropriate quality standard. Responsibility for good housekeeping and, ensuring appropriate practices and procedures are followed within the Product Dev areas. Also responsible for the day to day personal safety of self and others;
• Responsibility for test rig #2 (500 bar 20,000rpm). The scope includes designing, co-ordinating and implementing minor upgrades and improvements. This will include work on high pressure piping and equipment, there is also an opportunity to learn PLC and HMI programming – training will be given if required.

Required Skills and Experience:
• Strong general engineering education (Apprenticeship / ONC / HNC) or equivalent or a relevant degree;
• Good general mechanical engineering background, ideally with experience in product testing or high pressure equipment;
• A methodical, logical approach to work is most important with a practical mechanical aptitude;
• Ability to read engineering drawings (CAD experience would be an advantage);
• A team player with good communication skills is preferred;
• The ability to work to a tight time frame under pressure;
• Good housekeeping with a strong motivation to “get it right first time”, as is a high regard for personal safety and the safety of others;
• A willingness to learn new things is seen as essential;
• An asset – experience with special purpose machinery, engines, pumps, compressors, etc.;
• Nice to have - PLC programming experience;
• A general knowledge of gas seals would be an advantage, though people with experience of other mechanical equipment would be considered.
