The German Historical Institute Library is a research library with extensive holdings on German history from the late middle ages to the present day. The library currently holds about 87,000 volumes and is housed in a beautiful historic building in Bloomsbury. You will be part of a small team of five colleagues.

Main duties and responsibilities:

- Manage print and e-journals using a Microsoft Access Database

- Assist with new reader introductions, answer enquiries in person, by phone and email

- Assist with other library duties as necessary

Your profile:

To be considered for this role, you will need a good level of education preferably to degree standard. You have a qualification in library management or several years of experience of working in an academic or research library. You are IT literate and are familiar with Microsoft Office applications including Access databases. You are a good team player, but you are also able to work with minimal supervision and are a fast learner. You enjoy contact with readers and have a professional and courteous manner. You have a flexible approach to work and take pride in what you do. A working knowledge of German would be highly advantageous.

Experience Essential:

- Experience of working in an academic or research library

- Experience in managing a journal collection - Experience with electronic resources

- Familiarity with Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, Outlook and OneNote

- Familiarity with library management systems Desirable

- Experience of working with students, academics and the public Skills and Ability Essential

- Knowledge of the international serials market

- Strong IT skills

- Ability to enter data in an existing multi-level Microsoft Access database

- Ability to understand licence agreements

- Good understanding of written German

- Close attention to detail

- Outgoing, polite and friendly manner

- Flexible approach and enthusiasm for learning new skills

- Team player as well as self-motivated

- Availability for occasional evening duties until 8pm

Desirable:

- Basic oral German

- Ability to create simple queries and reports in Microsoft Access

- Ability to prepare basic statistical material in Microsoft Excel

- Familiarity with Wikis
