This is a really exciting time to be joining Mencap. We have recently appointed a new Executive Director of Communications, who is looking to beef up our Communications Directorate with a new Head of External Communications who will lead teams of passionate Media, Digital and Creative people through a time of steady growth and success.

As the Head of External Communications, the successful candidate will manage the day to day operations of three key communications teams, help develop, and deliver Mencap's communications strategy which supports our key organisational priorities. We are proud of our talented teams and want to recruit an equally talented leader for them.

Key Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day to day running of the communications teams
  • Help develop and deliver Mencap's communications strategy
  • Promote greater prominence of people with learning disability in the media
  • Develop and execute a forward looking and comprehensive communications plan
  • Ensure that communications are integrated and innovative across all our channels
  • Proactively secure positive coverage in both mainstream and social media, use influencers for greater impact
  • Work with stakeholders both internal and external across the whole organisation
  • Deputise for the Executive Director of Communications as and when required

The ideal candidate for this position will have outstanding writing skills and will be passionate and enthusiastic about all forms of communication. We are looking for an individual who is not scared to do their own thing and really want put their own stamp on this newly created role. You will have the drive to succeed but not be afraid to have a little fun along the way.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Strong experience in Public & Media Relations at a senior / Head of level
  • Strong working experience and successful track record of promoting brand awareness through PR and news generation
  • Knowledge of digital and social media
  • Ability to produce integrated communications plans
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to write in a clear and concise way
  • Natural forward thinker with the ability to problem solve quickly and effectively
  • A proven track record of leading and developing teams
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to write in a clear and concise way

Understanding of the charity sector and learning disability would be highly advantageous but in no way is this essential.
