Your new role

Hitachi Rail Europe is currently searching for a Senior Technician to join our team in West London at our North Pole Depot. This is a permanent position working a rotating day and night shift.

Total Compensation Package including Shift Bonus and London Allowance: £49,507

In this exciting new role you will be responsible for undertaking corrective and preventative maintenance, servicing, complex fault finding and repair of Hitachi rolling stock assets.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Great Western contract mobilisation and ongoing delivery of the operational maintenance requirements.
  • Support Great Western and East Coast Main Line train delivery, testing and commissioning teams in the UK and in Japan.
  • Personally undertake and / or support the Maintenance technicians with the “safety of the line” inspections prior to commencement of nightly / daily testing and that this is recorded into the Maintenance Management System.
  • Personally undertake and / or support the Maintenance technicians with performing the testing maintenance regime at North Pole or any other testing location as required in such a way as to not impact operational test running.
  • Personally undertake and / or support the Maintenance technicians with the physical delivery of the trains and undertake the maintenance acceptance processes.
  • Undertake fault finding and repair of Hitachi rolling stock assets incorporating best practice and lessons learnt from the established Class 395 maintenance team at Ashford.
  • Undertake depot special tools initial training and competency assessment To include depot protection systems, bogie drop equipment, fire alarm, lifting equipment (including crane systems and mobile hydraulic lifting equipment), depot maintenance shed 25kv overhead traction supply, train windscreen lifting device, mobile lifting/scaffolding platforms and train wash.
  • Support the continued development of the SAP maintenance management system (MMS).Ensure all shop floor requirements are captured and delivered.
  • Act as lead and mentor to the Maintenance technicians and the continued expansion of the depot maintenance teams on a shift bases.
  • Read and extract information from traction and rolling stock drawings and specifications
  • Must be prepared to travel and overnight away from base location for short periods of time to support Great Western and East Cost Main Line train commissioning, testing and specialist training.
  • Liaise with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
  • Must undertake training for depot train driving / assessment and pass as competent.
  • Assist as required
  • Network Rail Sentinel PTS preferred, but not mandatory if applying from outside the railway
  • Manual Handling, COSHH, working at height, Powered plant and tools – air / 110v experience.
  • Experience of direct and indirect assessment of staff on the shop.
  • Experience of supporting a maintenance team on a shift bases in a modern rolling stock maintenance depot environment is preferred but not required
  • Outstanding Safety Awareness gained in an operational environment
  • Test, approvals and commissioning experience preferably gained from new fleet introduction would be preferred
  • Highly experienced in modern fault finding and repair techniques using pc based laptops and remote diagnostics.
  • Competent with stores, spare parts logistics and material management on a railway maintenance depot.
  • Extensive experience of modern maintenance management systems (MMS) and associated reliability and available trend analysis.
  • Experience of performing modifications and campaigns
  • To ensure safety with our fatigue index, candidates must live (or relocate) to within one hour driving distance from our North Pole Train Maintenance Centre - W10 6AU

  • M & E ONC or served apprenticeship with mechanical, electrical disciplines or equivalent proven railway, aerospace, armed forces or heavy vehicle maintenance experience.
  • Engineering based NVQ level 3

  • Comfortable working alone or in a team
  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, rules and regulations (internal and external)
  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times
  • Calm and diplomatic under pressure, able to support, teach and mentor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to interface effectively with all levels of personnel both within and outside the company.
  • Loyal, committed, confident and determined.

Licences / Competencies

  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
  • Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings reading
  • Train driving, Fire warden, First Aider
  • Powered plant and tools – bogie drop, cranes, air systems / 110v tools.
  • Train driving assessment and licence
  • Depot Protection
  • Working at Height, COSHH, Manual handling, AC/DC Depot isolation
