Main Responsibilities

The annual budget setting and quarterly projection processes:

  • Assist in development and roll out of budget modelling provided to Faculties and Services
  • Carrying out reconciliations and variance analysis from previous year's budgets and forecasts
  • Modelling the impact of pay and inflationary increases
  • Liaising with Management Accountants, key stakeholders (including budget holders) and providing advice and support during the budget setting and quarterly projection processes
  • Assist in the compilation of the budget and projection packs for the Executive
  • Loading and phasing budgets and projections into the financial system and reports
  • Support to and compilation of budget and forecasts for assigned business areas

Financial Management:

  • Preparation of accruals and prepayments and input into the University financial system (SAP)
  • Production of payroll reports for Faculties and Service Departments and processing of payroll corrections.
  • Assistance in the preparation of the Financial Management Report and the Financial Management Report pack
  • Carrying out reconciliations to underpin the monthly and annual financial results
  • Attend meetings with the Management Accountants to review Faculty/Service results and follow up any queries or outstanding actions from those reviews
  • Assist the Management Accountants in preparing projections for each Faculty and for the Central Services by means of analysis of results, information gathered at the meetings above and liaison with appropriate staff from the individual areas
  • Process journals for Management Accountants, ensuring that the documentation and sign off is in line with the departmental policy and University Financial Regulations
  • Support Management Accountants in producing the monthly performance reports for Faculties and Services
  • Ensure month end task list is adhered to in a timely manner in order to achieve Key Performance Indicators

Person Specification

Specific Knowledge

  • Knowledge of current accounting standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of management information systems and their use in running a large business.
  • Commerce
  • Current Higher Education issues


  • Presenting financial management information to stakeholders in an appropriate forum and at an appropriate level for the audience
  • Experience of a large complex organisation
  • Working with internal/external customers


  • Graduate level and Preferable CCAB qualification (full or part) or qualified by experience
  • Current or recent professional development

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Outstanding customer service (soft) skills
  • Ability to work alone on specific projects whilst still remaining a team member
  • Able to understand issues and provide advice to stakeholders at the appropriate level in a business context
  • Able to critically analyse data, interrogate information and raise challenge at the appropriate level
  • Excellent organising and prioritisation skills
  • Use of SAP or other established accounting package
  • Able to maximise the use of IT software (high level Excel skills are essential)
