The Department of Engineering Science within The University of Oxford is one of the most highly regarded centres for engineering excellence in the world, ranked third in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, ahead of MIT and Cambridge. Underpinning our department is a diverse, and closely-knit team of IT experts who support and host an incredibly robust technical infrastructure. As one of the largest IT departments across the University we are home to a passionate group of technology enthusiasts who manage projects and support technical environments including Microsoft, Linux, High-Performance Computing (HPC), Scientific Software and Digital. We now look to appoint an experienced Head of IT to assume critical ownership for the department and define our future strategy.
As the successful candidate in this role you will take full responsibility for the groups IT services, ensuring modernisation and improvement as our department grows. You will work with the Heads of Department and Finance to design the strategic direction for IT Services in line with the changing needs of the department and emerging technologies. Using your full ownership of the IT budget (£1 Million) you'll develop business cases for investment where you see fit and oversee successful completion of critical projects whilst anticipating, and preparing for new academic programmes taken on by our department.
Your background will originate from traditional IT Infrastructure and ITIL Service Management, encompassing Microsoft and ideally Linux technology. You'll have knowledge of how to effectively run an IT support service and manage technical projects whilst leading diverse team of technical experts. Although your technical skill set will help you understand the structure and demands of our department, our key requirement for your new role is the ability to lead, manage and most importantly influence people who are world-leading experts in their own field. Our range of academic programmes demand a lot of our IT systems and you will need to decide allocation of the available service and liaise with stakeholders to prioritize upcoming requirements.
