Job Title: Maintenance Engineer

Reports to: Works Manager / Directors

Indirect Reports: Plant Operators

Hours: 7:30am-5pm Mon - Thurs, 7:30am-3pm Friday + 8 Hours PPM per month

Salary: £34,000-£40,000 + Overtime

Main Purpose of Job:
To maintain and repair all items of equipment in the factory and where possible work to a pro-active maintenance programme to improve efficiencies, decrease waste and costs and eliminate re-occurring problems.

Day to Day Operations:

  • Your daily routine is to ensure that the chemical plant operates as efficiently as possible. In order to do this, you must work to a weekly Engineering Maintenance Schedule as agreed in your weekly engineering meeting (held with the Works Manager, QC Manager, and where possible another member of the management team) to fix areas on time and within agreed budgets.
  • Roles specifics include but are not restricted to:
    • Maintaining steam boilers and organise periodic checks by the Boiler Inspector, this also applies to all pressure vessels.
    • Arranging a preventative maintenance schedule which will incorporate an analysis of weak points in the system and implement strategies, procedures and methods to improve reliability.
    • Ordering spare parts as required, and to keep a stock of vital spares, ensuring that nothing is ordered without an agreed PO (to ensure costs are controlled and within Company budget)
    • Organising routine servicing schedules of equipment throughout the factory keeping records of such for Auditors and Inspectors.
    • Fitting new parts including those required for new products or for maintenance
      • Ensuring that all new parts and machine changes are closely monitored and controlled and that you have signed off the equipment as 'fit for purpose' before 'handing it over' to the Operatives
    • Checking and calibrating instruments to make sure they are accurate.
    • Carrying out quality inspections
    • Training and writing procedures for any equipment to allow Operatives to use quickly and effectively.
    • Maintain the required standards of housekeeping.



To be effective in your role, you must be able and willing to:

  • Deal efficiently with crisis maintenance.
  • Respond immediately to urgent equipment breakdowns, including adhoc call-outs if required.
  • Fix faults on site or arranging for replacement machinery or equipment to be installed
  • Keep production operatives and managers on progress of delays are lengthened
  • Deal directly with any maintenance issues highlighted in the previous days production report.
  • Discuss with the management team any proposed planned maintenance, and preparing any pipe-work (welding) etc ready for speedy maintenance.
  • When required, helping to dismantle old machinery.
  • Clearing blocked pipe-lines, and emergency repairs.
  • Liaise with production / engineering colleagues or suppliers of specialist equipment to improve / prevent downtime.
  • Undertake any self-development activities as required by the Business.
  • Demonstrate a flexible attitude towards work and be able to respond to Business priorities appropriately.


Organisational Strategy and Leadership:

  • To be able to organise maintenance plans, discuss all maintenance issues with the management team and directors.
  • To be able to deal with outside engineers and electricians, and the Health and Safety Executive, together with the Boiler Inspectors from the relevant insurance companies. To be able to demand that machinery should be switched off for safety or mechanical reasons.
