About us:

At the heart of TfL’s ~£400m technology and data strategy is the Technology Development department. We take the lead in the production of our own systems and are responsible for the design and delivery of platforms such as those enabling contactless ticketing, advanced journey planning at, and back office systems to monitor and track the position of our train fleet.
The Technology Development team itself is a multi-disciplinary organisation consisting of software developers, quality assurance testers, technical delivery specialists, product owners, and other solution architects. The team is recognised internally for its high quality software development and ability to introduce new technology in a reliable and cost effective manner.

About you:

You will work alongside the other software engineering disciplines to design and develop our next generation solution architectures. You will be comfortable in an agile setting whilst also being able to work collaboratively with other disciplines such as project managers and the handful of suppliers involved in our technology delivery roadmap. You will be an excellent communicator with problem solving ability to match.

Key responsibilities:

- You will design solution architectures that deliver against TfL’s needs, are fit for purpose, and meet the objectives of the department
- You will support own Technology Development projects, ensuring that architecture concepts are accepted and evolve during the course of the delivery
- You will build architecture deliverables such as the documentation for own projects, warranting that they are of an appropriate standard and their content is approved by relevant partners
- You will communicate and represent own projects at the Architecture Review Board seeking approval/guidance/feedback as required
- You will support senior colleagues in crafting project budgets, conducting options analysis, and informing build-vs-buy decisions
- You will improve the solution architecture discipline by supplying to our own standards, taking pragmatic decisions in light of project pressures and TfL’s complex technology landscape, working with wider technology community
- You will provide technology inputs to stakeholders to help them define product development roadmap and strategy


- Understand common solution design patterns for example, integration patterns, high transaction/low latency back offices, micro services
- Understand solution architecture deliverables and their contribution to the overall software development process
- Understand agile software development methodologies in multi-disciplinary environments
- Knowledge of UML including functional decomposition, use cases, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, components, and API design
- Degree, or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area is desirable (e.g. Software Engineering, TOGAF)


- You will analyse complex business/technical problems, synthesise solutions, and communicate options to a wide group of partners
- You will translate a set of approved business requirements and build a structured conceptual architecture, gaining consensus for own and other ideas
- You will map elements of own concept and detailed solution architectures to business and non-functional requirements
- You will collaborate with development community directly, ensuring concepts and architectures remain practical and that feedback is acted on


- Experience of designing and architecting end to end software solutions across leading ERP (e.g. SAP, Oracle or Microsoft) systems implemented in large & complex organizations
- Significant knowledge in providing consultative and solution-oriented capabilities across the one or more of the following end-to-end process areas Record to Report, Order to Cash, Produce to Deliver, Plan to Schedule, Procure to Pay, Hire to Retire, Finance and Commercial.
- Shown experience of software delivery within an overall agile development process
- Shown experience of working on a ERP transformation project
