Capel Manor College is London’s only Specialist College for land-based studies and an internationally renowned learning resource for all those interested in Horticulture, Animal Management, Saddlery, Arboriculture, Floristry, Garden Design, Countryside and the Environment.

Capel Manor College are currently recruiting for a Finance Manager to ensure the provision of a consistently high class finance service to the College and its subsidiary companies through the selection and management of a quality finance team that process current transactions, work to live lines and generate timely, relevant, quality information and advice.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, appraise, manage and provide leadership to the finance team whilst working in close liaison with the Director of Finance and responding to developing needs as communicated by the Senior Leadership Team.
  • To plan, manage and ensure the effective deployment of the resource requirements for the services that are the responsibility of the role in line with transaction volumes, peak workloads and reporting timelines.
  • Ensure the quality of postings to the ledgers via personal review, team management and budget holder dialogue. Secure appropriate corrections to the ledgers whilst ensuring the provision of staff training or amendments to processes and systems to avoid a repetition of the cause.
  • Generate management accounts within five working days of each month end by ensuring the currency of postings to the main ledgers (cash, sales, purchase and nominal) and applying fast close processes during the month.
  • Secure the reconciliation of all month end ledger balances within the management accounts timeline.
  • Working with the Finance Officer (General Ledger) review monthly pension reports for accuracy and ensure corrections are processed in that month’s payroll; secure accurate and timely monthly and annual returns to both the Teachers’ Pension Scheme and the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Prepare quarterly VAT returns for the group and project funding reports and government statistical returns as required.
  • Oversee the timely issue of sales invoices and collection of fees due; the reconciliation of the sales ledger to the Student Record System; the effectiveness of the debt collection agency; and the reporting of debt to the Governing Body.
  • Ensure all relevant staff are adequately trained in using the purchase ordering system; that suppliers are paid within their payment terms or within 90 days of invoice where a dispute has arisen; staff, student expenses and student bursaries are promptly paid.
  • Ensure staff transact in accordance with College’s Financial Procedures; that value for money is pursued through the tendering process; that fraud and embezzlement are prevented; College procedures are updated to allow for modern working practices and processes.
  • Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for group consolidated statutory accounts; support the work of the external and internal auditors and immediately implement their recommendations as approved by the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Provide training and support to budget holders to maximise their effectiveness in the role; assist them in planning budgets, monitoring performance and managing College resources in line with the actual growth or decline in operational outputs.
  • Assist the Director of Finance as required in supporting the Senior Leadership Team to deliver an operating surplus each year and ensure financial key performance indicators are achieved.
  • Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Fully qualified CIMA/ACCA/ACA
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Significant management experience in delivering a full range of finance department activities.
  • High level financial planning / budgeting skills / and report writing
  • Experience in applying tax legislation and pension management to corporate advantage
  • Experience of leading teams and/or managing staff
  • Ability motivate and lead staff and Apprentices
  • Ability to lead others through inspirational leadership which commands respect and provides an environment where others feel motivated
  • Ability to delegate effectively and manage the performance of others in accordance with good management practice
  • Good numeracy, literacy and interpersonal skills (both written and verbal)
  • An ability to develop positive working relationships with individuals at all levels (internal and external) to promote the College
  • Familiarity with appropriate IT and applications
  • The ability to manage budgets and meet financial targets
