Not-for-profit healthcare organisation requires a Software Development manager to work at their office in central London.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The Development Manager is responsible for managing design, build, unit test, integration test and implementation of bespoke applications based, predominantly, on the Microsoft .NET framework but using complementary technologies as appropriate. The current focus is on developing the consumer website and private portal. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for configuration and development of the CRM / Marketing platform which is based on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Dotmailer.
The Development Manager will manage a team of 3 developers and one tester. He/she will manage the development lifecycle according to agile principles and will be personally responsible for backlog management (together with the product manager), sprint planning, task creation and assignment, daily stand ups, monitoring of progress during the sprint and conducting the sprint review and retrospective. It is expected that the incumbent will be “hands on” as and when required to assist the team in achieving their objectives.
Working with internal Business Analysts, other developers and external third parties, the role requires a rich understanding of development principles, appropriate to the technologies and toolsets specific to the role. As the senior member of the team, the post holder provides guidance and mentors junior members of the team, providing peer review to promote team growth and learning.
The Development Manager is required to take responsibility for building to design requirements, at the direction of the CTO. He or she will regularly be involved in wider architectural discussions and be expected to utilise opportunities for continuous improvement and greater productivity.
Specific Responsibilities
• Design and development of bespoke solutions in line with business requirements and the IT strategy; apply specialist technical knowledge to identify improvements.
• Regularly contribute to wider architectural discussion and decisions, ensuring these are in line with longer term strategies and priorities.
• Analyse and review designs and work requests to ensure the most appropriate technology solution is identified.
• Ensure that the quality of work delivered meets prevailing standards, has minimal bugs and is highly supportable.
• Provide thought leadership to feed into the broader Technology strategy for solution delivery and promote adoption of prevailing good practices for code management, development and testing. Assist in the crafting of development standards and processes, particularly regarding secure development, ensuring that they are adhered to.
• Identify opportunities for automation and re-usability to increase productivity and value for money.
• Craft designs which are consistent with the strategies of the company, follow sound enterprise architecture models and provide configuration management to all implemented solutions.
• Work with infrastructure colleagues to ensure that software created is understood within the context of the service and that it can be handed over into support following release.
• Ensures that all solutions are adequately documented in respect of solution design and end user documentation.
• Provide peer review that promotes team growth and learning.
• Mentor other members of the team, sharing technical knowledge and providing guidance and support.
• Provide 3rd line support for production software systems.
• Work with Product Managers to provide input for planning and estimating work.
• Ensures the best possible functional and test requirements are defined for each design/ development work package.
• Acquires and maintains knowledge in the defined solution set
• Promotes and leads discussion around ways of working that promote best practice and continuous improvement within the team.
• To participate in the recruitment of staff as required, and to support appraisal and personal development including progressing any disciplinary or capability issues
