Mechanical Design Engineer- Electronic Equipment
Location: West Yorkshire
£35,000- £40,000 + Benefits + Flexi Working
Permanent Role

I am seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a successful engineering business that develops advanced electro-mechanical products and equipment. They have built a solid reputation supplying globally to some of the biggest names in the industry

You will take responsibility for providing functional leadership to the companies mechanical design activities, producing inspired and commercially viable designs supporting products through their full life-cycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Functional Leadership across the Company's mechanical design activities
  • Co-ordinate and plan Mechanical Design activities alongside the electronics, software, hardware, integration and test teams
  • Develop design concepts using 2D drawings, 3D models and prototypes.
  • Full lifecycle design and development for NPD projects
  • Constantly strive to develop products and ideas and make them fit for manufacture
  • Comprehensive understanding of materials and production processes for economic low volume manufacture
  • Be able to work to committed deadlines and within budgets
  • Responsibility for mechanical designs and related processes
  • Research of new technologies, materials, components and suppliers
  • Produce engineering drawings, specifications, BOM structures, part lists and costings
  • Test designs by physical or CAD modelling
  • Managing multiple design tasks by prioritising and planning work
  • Processing Sales Design Requests and Design Change Requests
  • Provide drawings and documentation to support sales quotations, project engineers and production teams
  • Development support for Production teams, technical support for quality issues


Key Skills and Background Required:

  • A high profile Mechanical Engineer with at least 5 years experience designing electronic equipment using a variety of materials with mechanical complexity.
  • Proficient user of 3D CAD (ideally Solidworks) for the creation of 3D detailed designs and 2D manufacturing drawings with working capability of AutoCAD
  • Experience packaging electronic components and assemblies
  • Familiar with switch and display technologies
  • Understanding of design for EMC, thermal management and ventilation
  • Sound experience to model fully constrained CAD geometry
  • Good working knowledge of limits, fits and tolerance standards for production control
  • Proven ability of quantitative mechanical tolerance analysis, with experience of FMEA and design risk is desirable
  • Able to detail design and produce documentation for manufacture and production release
  • Experience in managing design changes, drawing revisions, BOM introduction for new products and maintain BOM for existing products
  • Strong materials and manufacturing process knowledge: aluminium extrusions, sheet metal, injection moulding
  • Able to communicate well with other design and project teams, as well as with manufacturing and suppliers.
  • Strong working knowledge of Design for Manufacture, validation and production processes for low volume electro-mech products.
  • A creative problem solver, excellent analytical skills, ability to find route cause, then develop cost effective and reliable mechanical solutions
  • Experience with Illustrator creating print layouts (desirable)


Qualification Requirements:

  • A Degree or equivalent in Product / Mechanical Design
