The Department of Mechanical Engineering wishes to appoint a Senior or Principal Teaching Fellow to teach and tutor on the undergraduate Design and Manufacture course; and to manage and lead student centred practical engineering project teams.

Our undergraduate courses are ranked 3rd in the UK, and 8th in the World under The Times University Rankings. The undergraduate teaching team works closely with our dedicated support teams, providing a variety of resources and opportunities to help over 600 students reach their full potential. Involved in this is the constant progression of teaching methods in order to remain one of the top global Higher Education institutions for Mechanical Engineering courses.

Duties and Responsibilities

The teaching aspect of the role will include lecturing, tutoring, course development and assessment for our MEng and MSc programmes in Mechanical Engineering.

The Design and Manufacture course is highly practical, devised to support group make and test project work later in the undergraduate programme. Course subjects include design process, machine elements and engineering drawing skills. All students are taught solid modelling CAD and practical mechanical workshop skills. At Principal Teaching Fellow Level the management of a core element of the programme is expected.

The practical project role is the management and leadership of project work, both as part of the degree curriculum and for extra-curricular competitions. This will include the department Imperial Racing Green team, and include the management and development of the associated Pit Garage working in close collaboration with other academic and technical staff.

There is no expectation for the post holder to participate in research activities.

Skills, knowledge and experience

A degree in Mechanical or Production Engineering is highly desirable but extensive practical design and manufacture experience is essential. A strong working knowledge in the use 3d CAD is also essential. Experience in teaching would be beneficial, alternatively applicants must possess excellent communication skills developed in providing instruction to others and have a proven ability to initiate and lead teaching activities.
For the Principal Teaching Fellow post, applicants must show evidence of leading undergraduate teaching programmes.
