West Midlands Fire Service are looking to hire a Lead / Senior Systems Developer to work on their JAVA based systems that support the essential running of the fire service.

This role is suitable for an experienced developer with experience of developing in Java / Spring / Hibernate.

The role of the Senior Systems Developer (Support) is to work as part of the team responsible for providing support for ICT Systems, in line with agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA).

The successful applicant will be expected to:

- Undertake enhancements to existing software.
- Maintain and contribute to System documentation, with the aim of increasing and improving the shared knowledge system.
- Deliver 3rd Line Support to systems developed by both our in-house team and third-party providers.
- Triage all incoming support calls to the Systems Development team, using a knowledge based system to undertake fault diagnosis, implement workarounds and resolve problems.
- Identify trends in problems raised with the Support team, and assist in the designing and implementation of solutions to resolve them
- Take ownership of problems. Keeping customers updated with issues and resolutions, confirming fixes have been successful or to gather more information, as required.
- Contribute to system design meetings, to help ensure that new systems adhere to best practice standards and meet user requirements and expectations.
- Act as a testing resource for new systems or as part of our change management process.

They would also be expected to:

- Mentor and support junior team members, providing general guidance and assisting in the development of their technical skills.

Essential

- An understanding of and experience in using Java.
- An understanding of and experience in using Relational Databases & SQL.
- An IT related degree or equivalent work experience.
- Excellent communication, prioritisation and workload management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and an ability to use initiative in solving problems.

Desirable

- Experience using Java / Spring / Hibernate.
- Experience using Postgres / Oracle.
- Experience creating/supporting Java web applications.
- Knowledge of Agile working practices.
- Knowledge and Experience of any of the following technologies: JavaServer Pages (JSP), SASS, Jasper Reports (Jasper Studio), XML.
