Rural Teaching and Community Volunteer Work in Tanzania
Zanzibar is an undisputed paradise so it’s no surprise that it attracts a large number of tourists each year. With tourism increasing, many jobs are geared towards the booming industry. With poor literacy levels and lack of training in the local community, jobs in the tourism industry are increasingly taken by people from other parts of Africa who have a higher level of training and English-speaking skills.
As a volunteer you will work with a number of different institutions aiming to improve the level of English in the area. Placements range from pre-schools, primary and secondary schools supporting local teachers in educating and playing with children, as there are often too many children for the small amount of staff. You can also get involved with teaching not only English, but also computer and life skills to adults at the local tourism training institute, helping them get work. The focus of your project will depend on the time of year you visit and the school holidays, but there is plenty of work all year round.
There are no specific qualifications required; however those without education qualifications of TEFL will be limited to teaching assistant roles. Project fees apply, but include accommodation, airport pick-ups, food, orientation and 24h support.
