Job Overview

Build Recruitment are currently working in partnership with Southwark Council in their search for a Building Surveyor based at their new flagship building on Tooley Street. The role is a permanent position and will pay between £34,725 – £41,304 per annum. The Building Surveyor will manage projects and the technical and professional performance of works and services. Carry out a programme of work, including all pre/post contract duties; ensuring that work conforms to all statutory regulations and specifications and with high levels of customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage designated buildings, projects, contracts and budgets including tendering and procurement processes where appropriate.
  • Monitor and ensure contractor compliance with health and safety, energy efficiency, sustainability, and other policy and regulatory standards and targets.
  • Manage procurement and monitor the performance of contractors against contract schedules
  • Carry out inspections. Prepare specifications, schedules of work and any costs/estimates where required and ensure that all works orders/contracts comply with appropriate legislation, codes of practice, British/European standards, the Council’s Standing Orders and financial regulations under the guidance of the Building Surveyor Services Manager
  • Ensure that the Building Surveying Services Manager and Senior Building Surveyor are regularly briefed on performance and kept informed of progress with regards to projects/works programme.
  • Arrange to seek estimates or tenders based on specifications and process all relevant documentation relating to the works. Seek approval from the Senior Building Surveyor / Building Surveying Services Manager before instructing contractor/consultants
  • Carry out the programmes of work, including all pre/post contract duties; ensuring that work conforms to all statutory regulations and specifications and with high levels of customer satisfaction.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) or holds an appropriate professional qualification - Building ONC, CIOB/RICS, ideally chartered surveyor or equivalent, HNC/degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety considerations in managing contracts
  • Sound building and surveying experience including planned preventative maintenance and contracts management.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of key compliance disciplines i.e. Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, ACoP L8, Health & Safety good practices etc
  • Experience in working in large, multi-functional organisation, demonstrating an understanding of and ability to negotiate the relationships between different parts of the organisation.
