Cycle instructor

Salary: £10 to £10.60 per hour

We are currently looking for competent, passionate cyclists, who enjoy working with other people and sharing their skills and enthusiasm. You will be willing to work in the designated areas and be prepared to work in all weather conditions. This is a very rewarding role with our instructors receiving the opportunity to encourage learners to be fit, healthy and environment friendly all during a fun activity. You will be delivering positive skills that our learners will be equipped with for the rest of their lives.

You will be trained to national standards, on a four day course provided by Essex County Council. In order to receive this training free, you will deliver the first 4 courses without remuneration with the understanding that you will run a minimum of 5 courses per year to maintain your Bikeability Instructor registration. A £50 refundable deposit will be taken at the outset of the course as a gesture of commitment. The dates of the course will run from the 14th to 17th of August 2018, inclusive.


In this role you will be required to adhere to road safety law as you do in your daily life. You will be required to register for an Enhanced DBS.

You should be able to plan and organise courses alongside demonstrating reliability and efficient time keeping in your role, experience of cycling and awareness of potential hazards are also required.


Interviews are scheduled to take place on 3rd May, 4th May, 8th May and 10th May 2018.


The Role
To manage the delivery of training to cyclists to the National Standards, in line with the Government approved Bikeability scheme.


Key Accountabilities

  • Work with adults and children in a formal setting
  • Liaise with schools and other organisations re: cycling and Bikeability courses and keep to dates and times booked with the school.
  • Maintain accurate records such as Risk Assessments and ensure signed parental consent forms received from each child before commencement of course.
  • Plan and organise courses alongside demonstrating reliability and efficient time keeping.
  • Ensure all training is carried out in accordance with the Bikeability Scheme as accredited and registered with Cycling England
  • Ensure all training, both on and off road is carried out in accordance to Health and Safety requirements
  • Undertake Risk Assessments for both off road and on road training
  • Complete continued professional development for all Instructors and assistant Instructors including carrying out mentoring / monitoring sessions
  • Keep record sheets of all cycle training delivered and complete yearly returns to the Road Safety Manager
  • Any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post and grade
  • It may be necessary for the post holder to be trained in, and use, new technology as it is introduced into the County Council activities

  • Be a regular, competent cyclist
  • Good Communication skills
  • Experience of working with people
  • Confident using IT
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • To be mobile throughout an operational area and therefore a valid driving licence and use of a car, appropriate for delivery of resource, is required. e
  • Suitably fit in order to undertake training duties and supervise children.
  • Ideally Hold a First Aid Qualification
