My client is a UK focused oil exploration company targeting the discovery of oil & gas offshore United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS). The company uses latest technology to identify exploration and appraisal opportunities and mature them through the drilling phase. The company has exciting plans to begin its first operated drilling activities in 2017.

Role Overview:

They are now seeking a bright experienced Accountant to perform the varied financial tasks required of a small but energetic company and provide the control and reporting capability of a larger corporate structure. Handling all day to day financial affairs will quickly bring the person up to speed with the key drivers and focus areas as the company moves ahead with its drilling plans.

Working with the Financial Director, the Accountant will take over work responsibility for the core accounting processes while pressing ahead with implementing a new reporting system. Being a small corporate environment you will be exposed to broad aspects of the business and be expected to play a key role within the exploration team.


The Group are currently rolling out SunSystems in an implementation tailored to the oil industry and reporting requirements of the group. While the initial focus will be on the implementation, this is an excellent opportunity to learn the system from the start so that key reports are produced efficiently and the system used widely and willingly.

Whilst the individual’s primary focus will be on the UK operating company they will be exposed and expected to contribute towards to the other activities of the group.

Job Requirements

Experience required:

• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the upstream oil and gas industry
• Sound knowledge of accounting fundamentals
• Sound knowledge of Microsoft excel
• Good interpersonal skills

Key responsibilities:

• Complete Accounts Payable function
• Banking, cash reporting and management
• Control, validation and payment of Expenses
• Submitting quarterly VAT returns
• Joint Venture accounting, including monitoring Licence costs, liaising with JV partners, preparation of invoices
• Cost control for drilling project and administrative expenditure
• Budgetary control and variance analysis
• Monthly accounts preparation, closing of periodic group reporting
• Preparation of ad hoc management reports & information
• Budgeting & forecasting
• Contribution to Statutory accounts
