My client is one of the world’s leading providers of testing, calibration, advisory & certification services. They now require an Assistant Operational Finance Manager. This job requires attendance at Stevenage for 3 days a week and at High Wycombe for 2 days a week.

Job Purpose

This role is responsible for the collection, reconciliation and reporting of financial and operational information, to:

Prepare financial and management reports

Support sector and laboratory management on decision making

Interact, coordinate and communicate with the Group and other stakeholders

Provide KPI monitoring and reporting

Support the planning, budgeting and forecasting processes

Deputise for the OFM when required

Main Responsibilities

Financial Reporting

Preparation of detailed monthly report with key variances to budget and forecasts explained thoroughly

Monthly Capex and P&L forecasts

Assist in the evaluation and compilation of capital expenditure requests

Ensure areas of responsibility adhere to Shared Service monthly and annual reporting timetable

Detailed analysis of key areas of balance sheet Cost control

Identify and as part of a team drive cost reduction initiatives

Production of management reports identifying key cost / sales variances and implement corrective actions

Prepare models to verify the impact of new initiatives or investments

Clear understanding of overheads and overall cost base

Continually work with the Lab teams to develop internal processes to achieve efficiency savings Working Capital

Working capital focus - invoicing, aged debt control, process improvement

Contribute to driving down overdue payments and DSO across the sector

Monitor and drive process improvement within the order to cash process i.e. timely and accurate invoicing, dispute monitoring

Closely liaise with credit control to facilitate a coherent approach to debt management


Support the Sector Leadership and General Manager in the development of robust forecasting tools and processes

Detail the risks attached to our forecasts and work with the GM on mitigation actions

Work with the Sales and Lab teams in price modelling and monitoring

Be a key driver in the preparation of monthly forecasts, annual budgets and strategic plans

Provide information to support the sector management on decision making

Candidate experience and profile

Experience of working in a similar position with excellent accounting skills including general ledger and monthly reporting

Computer literate, ideally with good knowledge of Finance applications (e.g. Navision and Cognos), and an excellent standard of knowledge in Excel (preferably 2007/2010), and Outlook

Self-management & time management skills

Problem solving skills to be able to proactively identify issues and work to identify and implement solutions to ensure financial stability of the organisation

Personal Accountability - personally do what is needed to improve the situation and take decisive actions to solve problems

Results-oriented - understand the goals and objectives, responsible for and focused on achieving them

Strong communication skills (verbal/ telephone/ written)

Ability to challenge and question accounting treatments

Degree or qualification in accounting beneficial

Able to understand, review and recommend reporting and system operation improvements

Fully qualified or Part Qualified and active studier - preferably at final stages
