Principal Project Planner


Job Description

The Principal Project Planner will operate as a professional, maintaining complex projects or as the focal point for the planning activities for a group of related projects or a large programme. Principal Project Planners may have some line management responsibility but the type of activities supervised will be of a similar nature.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Maintain the accuracy of project plans, ensuring they reflect the project objectives, are updated in a timely manner and are communicated to all stakeholders
  • Ensure plans are integrated in to overall project requirement, with dependencies to other functions identified through scenario planning
  • Using scenario planning evaluate potential options for programme/IPT
  • Work for and as part of the IPT to interrogate and identify cost and schedule variance
  • Prepare and analyse data (EVM, CPA) required to influence programme decision making
  • Improve and influence of company planning and cost systems and performance measures for projects
  • Understand and contribute to project risk analysis and maintenanceContribute to the preparation, management and review of bids, and communicate to the relevant internal stakeholders
  • Deputising for the POM/Team Leader
  • Internal auditing of processes and procedures
  • Training and supervision of junior members
  • Estimating for planning and signing off of other planners estimates
  • Creating and maintaining detailed project plans in a professional scheduling tool

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

  • Good computer literacy, including all Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft Project.
  • Good numeracy skills and basic financial awareness
  • Understanding of the principles and practice of Life Cycle Management (Product, Business Winning and Project Lifecycles)
  • Proficient in use of SAP Tool for planning and project management and execution elements, capability for using other planning tools as necessary
  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures gained through training including: EVM Standard Theory, Network Planning, Critical Path Analysis and Risk Management.
  • Demonstrated competency of using Critical Path Analysis and Risk Management tools.
  • Understanding and influencing company planning and project management processes and procedures.
  • Strong influence to internal stakeholders, using data and analysis to support line of reasoning.
  • Ability to coordinate a team
  • Detailed understanding of EVM, CPA & Risk Management
