Senior Platform Engineer (Unix)
Location: Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Salary: £35,000-£40,000
Start: ASAP.

The Senior Platform (UNIX) engineer is a critical role within Group-IT with a primary objective of operationally supporting and administrating Unix system and associated services and applications. The role will be responsible for all operational events and incident management, configuration management and patch management across the enterprise-wide Unix system infrastructure. Primarily the role will be providing the required support and administration to maintain optimum performance and utilisation of the associated platform including Solaris (10), RedHat based systems (RHEL 6 & 7) and Oracle platforms. The role will act as a subject-matter expert around the Unix platform assisting the technology group around technical requirements capture, design principles and operating process and procedures.

Person Specification:

*Expert knowledge of Unix IT networks including areas such as system applications, databases, operating systems, servers, storage and data backup & recovery
*Expert working knowledge in Solaris (10), RedHat based systems (RHEL 6 & 7 based Systems) and Oracle.
*Intermediate knowledge of IT applications including databases, connectivity, integration and front/back-end servers.
*Ability to analyse complex technical and business issues and to formulate innovative, creative, well-reasoned and logical propositions, designs or resolutions.
*Understanding and correlating disconnected documentation and information into structured architecture models and principles that support technology transformation and meet the user needs
*Working knowledge of network infrastructure including datacentres, WAN/LAN networking, Security and a good understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS & DHCP
*Experience in Cloud infrastructure implementation (Azure, AWS)
*Experience of Power Shell scripting and automation of tasks
*A good understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS & DHCP
*Knowledge and experience in maintaining and administering Citrix Xen App v 6.0 or similar
*Familiarity with virtual infrastructure (VMWare/Hyper V)
*Experience of using SolarWinds for monitoring and troubleshooting
*Experience of Transaction Monitoring tools and data interpretation
*Experience in the fundamentals of UNIX Scripting is Essential, e.g. BASH
*Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services general UNIX services such as Postfix etc.
*Experience with virtualisation technologies, such as Oracle VM or XEN & VMWare Highly Desirable
*Proven track record of resolving basic issues associated with system configuration management, resource sharing and basic networking concepts.
