We are looking for an intellectually capable, highly motivated qualified lawyer with powerful oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You will be working as part of a team of lawyers based in London. You will need good legal professional skills, including the following essential requirements: • reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk • sound analysis of issues, using secure legal research • making evidence based decisions • managing a quality service for clients.
We have an opportunity for a lawyer in HMRC, Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services (SOLS). SOLS is an integral part of HMRC. It is headed by the General Counsel and Solicitor, Gill Aitken, and includes approximately 150 lawyers who advise on legal issues arising from HMRC’s policy and operational work and conduct the Department’s litigation. Our legal work is high quality and covers a broad range of subjects. In addition to tax, our advice covers a range of general public law issues for HMRC, including human rights, administrative law, European law, freedom of information and sometimes commercial law. Our lawyers work in specialist teams handling specific areas of work. There is one position for a lawyer to join our Rating and Valuation Team which is part of the Business Tax Directorate in SOLS. Our work is primarily litigation-focused, but we do have an element of advisory. We litigate in the Valuation Tribunal, Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) and occasionally in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. We represent the Valuation Office Agency and most of the work revolves around business rates, with a small amount of council tax litigation as well.
Whilst it would be desirable for applicants to have relevant experience, we would welcome applications from lawyers with good litigation experience and a knowledge of public law. You will need good IT skills (word/excel/outlook).
The successful candidate will have a valid DBS or be willing to apply for one on CV submission. If a job offer is made we will confirm further details in relation to the clearance level requested for this assignment.
