Role Overview:

The tax team consists of the Head of Tax and Finance Graduate. In addition, there is a Tax Accountant who is part of the SSC focussing on VAT/CIS as part of a compliance team and a Group Accountant in Head Office in Uxbridge assisting with Direct taxes.

The Group has tax throughput of >£900m per annum with much of this being VAT and therefore a small error can lead to a significant financial and reputational impact for the group. This is an ideal opportunity for someone already operating in house or someone from the profession who wishes to progress their career in a growing FTSE250 business. This opportunity provides scope for this individual to make a real difference to the tax compliance processes for the business whilst adding value to the group by implementing tax planning and process efficiencies. For the right individual, there may be the scope to broaden the role in the medium to longer term.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary focus of the role is to support the Head of Tax managing the tax risk across the Group focussing on VAT and CIS technical accuracy.

Including: -

Technical reviews of the effectiveness of the compliance processes operated within the OUs and Shared Service Centre in Hinckley
Risk reviews of hot topics and legislative changes
Identifying tax knowledge gaps; sourcing and delivering appropriate training.
Potential opportunity to broaden the role to include other areas of tax such as SDLT and Employment Tax.
To become the first point of contact regarding VAT/CIS queries from the business.
Whilst this role will report in to the Head of Tax, it will require working closely with the SSC, Business Unit Finance Directors/Controllers as well as Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors.

You will also be responsible for the following aspects:

Work with the Tax Accountant who is within the SSC Finance Team to ensure that our filings are technically accurate.
Working with the Tax Accountant to ensure that accounting systems and processes are up to date and technically accurate.
Management of the Group VAT Registrations and options to tax.
Supporting the Head of Tax and Business Units with HMRC Audits.
Undertaking training of both finance and non-finance staff regarding both VAT treatment of supplies and tax within the accounting system.
Assisting the Head of Tax with responding to VAT/CIS technical queries from the business.
Assisting the Head of Tax with managing the VAT/CIS tax sections of the Group intranet.
Assisting the Head of Tax with VAT/CIS process and systems reviews to ensure that the Senior Accounting Officer certificate can be signed.
Assisting the Head of Tax with implementation of VAT/CIS tax planning to minimise tax outflows and maximise cashflows.

Experience and Qualifications:
Experience and knowledge of VAT compliance for a large group.
CTA qualified/part qualified or qualified by experience.
Knowledge of tax in accounting systems preferable.
Knowledge of CIS preferable.
Preferably experience of working in house however practice candidates will be considered
Preferably experience of tax for a Construction and/or Housebuilding business.
Personable and able to build relationships across the business at all levels.
An eye for detail whilst remaining aware of the strategic objectives of the business.
Able to operate with autonomy and manage own workload.
Experience of coaching and developing others desirable.
