Cranleigh School is seeking to appoint a Graduate Assistant to the Religion & Philosophy Department for September 2018. The successful candidate will be passionate about the subject and they will also be keen to contribute to the sporting and co-curricular life of this busy boarding school.

Cranleigh is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day Senior School consisting of around 630 girls and boys of 13 – 18 years of age. There is also a Preparatory School on the opposite side of the road which has around 330 girls and boys.

This is a fixed term appointment and Cranleigh has its own competitive salary scale. Subsidised accommodation and all meals in term-time will be provided. There are seventeen weeks holiday in the year.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department consisting of five members of staff, is a close-knit and supportive team that are passionate about their subject and enjoy each other’s company. The successful applicant will need to feel comfortable with this way of working whilst at the same time be looking for opportunities to extend or modify working practices to maximise the potential of the pupils, encourage passion for the subject and ensure a high profile for the Department. A lively programme of co-curricular activities, events and visits is also part of the Department’s programme.

THE CURRICULUM

Religion and Philosophy are popular options at GCSE and A Level. Our aim is to stimulate a lifelong interest in the subject by opening students’ minds to new ideas and to give all students the satisfaction of knowing they have made real and measurable progress each year they spend with us. For GCSE we use the AQA specification and for A Level we use OCR. The Department has a strong track record in examination results.

The introduction of iPads for pupils from January 2018 provides many new opportunities and the successful candidate must be prepared to fully engage with this new initiative. All teachers are supplied with their own iPad. Our intention is for technology to be used to supplement and enhance learning.

THE POST

The responsibilities of the Religion & Philosophy Graduate Assistant will include:

- Teaching to the highest standard across all year groups, teaching sets to be decided by the Head of Department;
- With guidance, preparing suitable teaching material for each lesson and to follow the Departmental programmes of study;
- Contributing to the making and sharing of Department resources;
- Setting an appropriate level and quantity of prep in line with Departmental and Whole School Marking policies;
- Providing written reports, report grades and summative assessment marks by the deadlines set by both the Head of Department and the Deputy Head (Academic);
- Attending weekly Department meetings;
- Contributing to the preparation of students for tertiary education.

THE PERSON

The successful candidate will be a graduate with at least a 2:1 degree in Philosophy, Theology or a closely related subject. They will be self-motivated, good humoured and will relish the challenge presented by being part of a highly successful school and department.
This post would be ideal for anyone considering teaching or indeed just looking for a great place to spend a year getting some experience in the field of education.

No teaching qualifications are necessary – guidance and support will be offered to the successful candidate who will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team-player.

In addition s/he would be expected to get involved in all aspects of this busy boarding school including acting as a tutor to a group of students within a House and some delivery of the School’s PSHEE programme. This would normally include one evening duty per week. All teachers are expected to contribute to the School’s co-curricular programme and co-curricular activities alongside their academic responsibilities.

The appointment is fixed term for a year from September 2018.
