Job Summary

IT Services are seeking an enthusiastic and creative E-Learning Assistant to join the ABS Media and e-Learning Team.

The team assist students and staff throughout three Schools (Aberdeen Business School, Law School, Creative & Cultural Business) with queries related to use of media and e-learning technologies, specifically:

e-learning support (CampusMoodle and related technologies).
support for specific technical needs of specialist study areas such as business, law and the creative industries.

Working closely with other members of the team, your primary focus will be on supporting academic staff to update e-learning module study areas in the university's Moodle VLE, supporting students in their use of Apple computers and use of the photography studio.

This will include, amongst other areas, assisting staff to create and update presentation materials (e.g. audio-narrated presentations) and activities (e.g. self-assessment quizzes) in Moodle, along with reviewing and updating Moodle spaces to comply with a set of Baseline standards from a checklist.

You will be required to assist students in support of their media-related work, which can include support for photographic and video assignments, much of which makes use of Apple computers and technologies.

Working within a busy team, the role will require a high degree of organisational skills, attention to detail and willingness to learn new applications and approaches. The role will provide a good opportunity for professional development.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Learning Technologist

RESPONSIBLE FOR: There is no direct responsibility for any staff

PURPOSE OF POST: The primary focus of this post is to support academic staff with creating and updating e-learning module study areas and learning materials in the university's Moodle virtual learning environment (VLE) website and supporting students directly in their use of Apple computers and use of the photography studio and video-editing as part of their media-related studies.


Liaison with subject matter experts (academic staff) to support and implement engaging and interactive e-learning/online content.

Assist with the creation and update of e-learning study area materials and activities across a variety of existing study modules to help encourage consistency, efficiency of authoring and alignment with RGU branding and guidelines.

Assist with the development and promotion of VLE (course and module) study area templates to enhance consistency and efficiency of construction.

Assisting students with taking their own photos (e.g. knowledge of DSLR cameras and lighting set up) and managing the photo studio and related bookings.

Support for the filming/recording and video editing (e.g. Final Cut Pro) of e.g. lecture, events, student presentations.

General advice and support on media technology and practices in place for students.
Support in the use of Apple computers and iPads .

Photography/videography (and related editing) for marketing and social media purposes
Other design and development related tasks as required.

Person Specification



First Degree Honours degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Graphic / Web Design, IT, Digital Media) or demonstrable experience obtained within Higher Education or Commercial sector/s.


Knowledge of e-learning VLE software (Moodle, Blackboard,etc).
Skilled in the use of rapid content development tools such as: Articulate Studio 13/Storyline, Panopto, Captivate, Camtasia, Prezi etc.
Proficient with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, iMovie (or equivalent).
Graphic design / image manipulation (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks).
Expertise in Microsoft Office 2013, especially PowerPoint.


Knowledge and experience in the creation of interactive electronic content for learning and/or training.
Development and construction of media-rich content within a VLE (e.g. Moodle, Blackboard).
Experience of videography and video editing software and techniques.
Development of media-rich content suitable for delivery via social media channels.
Liaising with Subject Matter Experts to gather resources and communicate ideas.
Experience of using and support Mac computers in particular.
Excellent organisational and time-management skills with ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.



Apple, Adobe (or other) Training Certification.
Instructional Design Certification.


Understanding of content development utilising rapid content authoring software.
Proficient in Adobe InDesign (interactive documents and templates).
Understanding of the pedagogical issues and challenges associated with e-Learning content design.
Awareness and understanding of e-learning and accessibility standards (e.g. SCORM).


Effective use of Social Media.
Tools and Web 2.0 services.


May be required occasionally to support events, some of which may occasionally be out of normal business hours.
