What will this role of Materials Engineer Apprentice entail?

As a Materials Engineer Apprentice you will be predominantly based in the world-renowned Magnesium Technology Centre, where you will be involved in developing the futures lightweight advanced materials. You will also complete placements in other departments such as Quality Assurance and Manufacturing, which will be done in six monthly blocks. Your duties will include but not limited to:

* Sectioning of castings, extrusion and forgings, followed by preparation of specimens for metallographic analysis
* Tensile, hardness and corrosion testing
* Assisting in the developmental foundry to prepare small sand castings and water-cooled billets
* Collating results and report writing

You will also be enrolled on a three-year foundation degree course at Sheffield Hallam University, where you will spend one day a week learning about materials technology, studying the fundamental science behind metals and alloys, as well as composites, plastics and ceramics.

After the three years of studying for your foundation degree, you will have the opportunity to continue your studies for two more years and achieve a full Honours Degree. This qualification is accredited by The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Engineering Council as the academic qualification needed to register as a Chartered Engineer.

What will I need in order to be considered for this Materials Engineer Apprentice role?

* Have 3 A Levels, one of which must be Maths and either Physics or Chemistry, equivalent to 96 UCAS points. Alternatively, a BTEC National Qualification (to include Maths)
* 5 GCSE’s at grades A to C (or equivalent), including English, Maths and Science
* A passion for pursuing a career in engineering
* Superb time management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast paced, challenging environment
* Professional interpersonal skills
* Be a team player with a committed, flexible and positive approach to work
* IT literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

What will I receive in return?

Salary: £12,500.00 per year.

Attractive benefits: A fully paid for degree level qualification, along with 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays

Hours of Work: Full time, 37 hours per week

Contract type: Permanent

Location: Swinton, Manchester. One day a week will be spent at Sheffield Hallam University as part of your enrollment on a three-year foundation degree course.
