Our Client
Our client designs and manufactures precision optics systems for markets that include defence and security, aerospace, medical, simulation and machine vision. With a history that can be traced back over 150 years to the early days of microscopy, our client has a wealth of experience in developing complex optical systems from concept through to production manufacture. Our client is a privately-owned engineering business, with a small, highly skilled team serving customers worldwide. The company is based on a single integrated site in Hemel Hempstead.

Background to Requirement
Due to a recent retirement, and a healthy and growing list of opportunities, our client requires additional mechanical design engineering resource. This offers an ideal opportunity for a candidate who has some CAD experience but wishes to develop their skills in precision engineering and design. The projects have great variety and are invariably interesting from an engineering perspective, and the successful candidate will benefit from the outstanding experience and capabilities of the design team. There is at least one current vacancy.

• Create original solid models for a variety of devices and assemblies · Prepare manufacturing assembly drawings
• Prepare manufacturing piece part drawings with precision tolerances to ISO8888 and ISO10110
• Prepare Bills of Material
• Maintain drawings within ISO9001 configuration control system
• Amend and maintain drawing packs through change request procedures · Design tools and fixtures for assembly and testing
• Support sales, production engineering and test departments through to manufacture
• Interface externally with prospects and customers on all mechanical aspects of the project · Undertake peer design reviews

Required skills and experience
• Experience with solid modelling software - including SolidWorks
• Experience with detailing machined components to precision tolerances · Excellent attention to detail
• Experience with mounting optics an advantage · Experience with FEA an advantage

Other considerations
• Good communication skills are required – both oral and written
• Our client is a small business – the ability to be self-sufficient and to take responsibility and contribute beyond the specific job role is important
• Qualities of honesty, reliability and integrity are essential
• Travel to customer sites, including overseas, may be required · Good interpersonal skills and a sense of humour welcomed
