The General Merchandise team works on the “and more”. General Merchandise is expanding rapidly by increasing its range on the Ocado website and by launching new specialist websites: fetch, a pet specialist, launched in 2013, Sizzle, a kitchen and dining specialist, launched in 2014, and Fabled a premium beauty destination launched in partnership with Marie Claire in 2016.

Job Summary
The purpose of the role is to take overall responsibility for the Beauty category within Ocado’s product range and the trading relationships with all suppliers within that area. Also, to effectively manage and motivate the Junior Buyer(s) and Buying Assistant(s) within a given area through coaching, development and regular reviews.

- Achieving targets for the Beauty category by selecting the appropriate product ranges, and developing effective promotional campaigns
- Building relationships and engaging with Ocado suppliers in order to secure customer focussed ranges at the best retail and cost prices
- Negotiating promotional and media supplier funding to achieve targets
- Overall responsibility for ensuring range within the Beauty category is optimised to customer and matches business strategy
- Supporting the Senior Buying Manager and Junior Buyer(s) to find, agree and negotiate ranges and margins with suppliers
- Management and development of the Junior Buyer(s) and Buying Assistant(s)
- Supporting, developing and acting as day to day contact for the Buying Assistant(s).
- Provision of ad hoc reports for the Junior Buyer(s) and Senior Buying Manager (sales reports, promotional analysis etc)
- Keep abreast of market conditions, trends, competitor’s performance and brand strategies
- Identify new market opportunities and take the lead in constructing robust and successful business proposals that secure market leading positions
- Deputise for the Senior Buying Manager and Buyer(s) during absence/holiday/off site periods
- Managing the promotional process from initial agreement with suppliers through to the actual promotions being live on the web site for customers to purchase.
- Co-ordinating promotional and media activity, both within the team and with other Buying teams and the Marketing teams
- Ad Hoc visits to suppliers and related competitors
- Ad Hoc support to the wider GM team

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

- Proven experience in a trading or buying team
- A strong track record of supplier negotiation
- Experience of category management practice
- Strong communication, negotiation and relationship building skills (supporting Junior Buyer(s) and The Senior Buying Manager to negotiate and manage supplier relationships and work internally with Buying, Marketing, Merchandising and Supply Chain teams)
- Commercial Acumen: A clear idea of what action to take to boost sales, particularly with regard to poor performing lines or poor product areas. Identifying winners and building on successes.
- Planning & Organising : A proven track record in planning (required to ensure you make timely decisions, hit deadlines for range decisions, range planning, launching new lines/ranges, promotions, banner planning, managing website content, seasonality, reviews, objective setting and PDP’s.
- Self-motivated and confident decision maker who is able to work independently
- Strong people management and team building skills
- Customer focused
- Analytical Skills: The ability to analyse market data, sales data, promotion data, KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and supplier performance.
- Blue Sky Thinking: The ability to “think outside the box” in relation to new products, promotional strategies and sales planning.
- Presentation skills: The ability to present thoughts, ideas, plans and supporting data in a clear and concise manner.
- Proven administrative experience, with the ability to learn new systems and processes quickly
- PC Literate – at least intermediate level MS Office
- Flexibility to travel offsite to external meetings as required
- Flexible approach to work, ability to pre-empt and adjust for business challenges
- Ability to multi-task and organise effectively under pressure

Preferred (in addition to minimum)
- Proven knowledge of the Beauty Category
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent) with a minimum of 2:1 (Preferable)
- Proven experience within an e commerce background
- Project Management experience – the ability to work to a critical path
- Industry Awareness: A detailed knowledge of the How, Who, What, Why and workings of the specific category industry.
