Chemistry Teacher

One of seventeen in the movement, UWC Atlantic College, founded in 1962, is the original United World College. Perched above the Bristol Channel approximately 20 miles west of Cardiff, our 360 students study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and take part in an outstanding co-curricular programme in support of the UWC mission. Enjoying a spectacular location at St. Donat’s Castle, the 16 – 19 year olds are drawn from over 90 nationalities, with 60% of our students being non-native English speakers.

We want to appoint a qualified and dynamic Chemistry Teacher who is internationally-minded with a demonstrable passion for and deep understanding of the UWC mission and values. The willingness to teach Environmental Systems would be an advantage.

As the Head of Faculty post for IB Group 4 (Science) will be vacant from August 2018, the successful candidate will be able to apply for that position when it is advertised. The Head of Faculty carries an additional annual allowance of £4,400.

You will:

  • Be suitably qualified to teach Chemistry
  • Inspire and lead students to ensure they are motivated and enjoy participating in lessons and are given appropriate opportunities to develop their potential in a positive, innovative and effective working environment
  • Show sensitivity and insight into social / emotional / cultural matters of a diverse student population
  • Be familiar with digital technologies for learning and teaching
  • Have knowledge of relevant assessment procedures and methods
  • Participate fully as a team member in the faculty and whole college
  • Be able to communicate effectively with all members of the College community

Some main tasks / responsibilities, amongst others, are:

  • Being an enthusiastic member of the College’s faculty, supporting students in academic, pastoral and others matters
  • Collaborating with class teachers and other employees to provide in-class support and guidance
  • Acting as a Personal Tutor and playing a full role in supporting the needs of 10 tutees outside of the classroom
  • Participating in the co-curricular programme according to the needs of the College including a weekly commitment to service
  • Ensuring all projected grades are submitted on time, internal moderation procedures are carried out effectively and accurate records of achievement are maintained
  • Teaching lessons in accordance with the College’s requirements
  • Planning, preparing and delivering lessons that follow the Faculty’s scheme of work
  • Ensuring that lessons are suitably differentiated and appropriate to serve the needs of all members of the class
  • Marking student work on a regular and timely basis in accordance with faculty and College assessment policies
  • Maintaining accurate records for classes, including registering and results

The employment package will be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and will include the following elements:

  • Salary £23,968 – £40,560 per annum depending on previous experience and qualifications
  • Teachers’ Pension Scheme membership
  • College holiday closures

The Role

UWC Atlantic College is a founding member of a global education movement based upon the ideas of Kurt Hahn.

This is an exciting opportunity for a full time Chemistry Teacher to work within our IB Group 4 Faculty of Sciences from August 2018. The Faculty has 9 science teachers and 3 technicians and offers Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Design Technology and Environmental Systems and Societies.

Experience with the International Baccalaureate is an advantage but is not required or expected. What is most important is the ability to teach both subjects well and with a passion. You should have a recognised teaching qualification and the ability to teach the IB Higher Level and Standard Level courses.

The IB Chemistry course at both levels aims to devote time to fundamental concepts so the students have good understanding of the underlying chemical theory. Elementary concepts are introduced at molecular level and the course then proceeds in a logical manner to more advanced work in Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Experimentation is given emphasis throughout the course. The necessary practical, analytical and evaluative skills are developed as the course progresses to enable the students to carry out independent research towards a practical based project.

Environmental Systems and Societies is a Standard Level subject firmly grounded in both a scientific exploration of environmental systems in their structure and function, and in the exploration of cultural, economic, ethical, political and social interactions of societies with the environment. As a result of studying this course, students will become equipped with the ability to recognise and evaluate the impact of our complex system of societies on the natural world.

The IB Diploma is a subject group award so all students will be taking mother tongue literature, a first foreign language, a humanities subject, Mathematics and Theory of Knowledge in addition to a science subject.

Class sizes vary but rarely contain more than twenty students. It is the practice of the Faculty for a teacher to be responsible for teaching each of their classes for the whole two year period. A number of students choose to write their extended essays in Chemistry each year, and you would be expected to take part in supervision and have an understanding of research skills.

The style of teaching has to make full allowance for the fact that our students, aged between16 – 19, come from different educational systems and different cultures with different experiences of the subject areas. The diversity, richness of experience, culture and background is a resource and seen as a strength in this College.

In addition to the teaching commitment, UWC Atlantic College has an extensive co-curricular programme of community service, activities, student-led conferences and project week. All teachers are expected to fully participate in these activities, including helping and leading aspects of the broader curriculum.

All teachers take on a pastoral tutorial role and will typically be responsible for supporting approximately 10 tutees. Tutors are the main point of contacts for parents. The weekly timetable has scheduled tutorial meetings but in addition to these tutors are expected to arrange for individual sessions with their tutees and follow their progress and provide regular support.

The College operates on a semester system. The Autumn Term ends in early December and the Spring Term runs from early January to the middle of June. Please note that our holiday periods are different from other schools and that we are operational during bank holidays (with the exception of Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas holidays). There is a break of approximately 9 weeks from the middle of June to mid-August for Summer, a break of approximately 4 weeks from end of the 1st week in December to January, October Half Term (1 week) and a Spring Break (1 week). Holiday periods are determined by the IB examination periods.

Conditions of Service

Core Working Hours

Approximately 35 hours per week including teaching, personal tutor duties, extended essay supervision, meeting participation and faculty duties as required. There will be a requirement to undertake hours in relation to the co-curricular programme. Please note, working hours are subject to variation and review according to the needs of the college. The pastoral care that we offer to our students is a crucial part of all our teaching roles and teachers are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the student experience.

Salary Range

£23,968 – £40,560 per annum. The salary offered to the successful candidate will be in line with this salary scale and dependent on the individuals experience and qualifications.

  • The receipt of two satisfactory references (or more if required)
  • Verification of identity and educational and professional qualifications
  • The receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced Check for Regulated Activity (which includes a Barred List check) from the Disclosure and Barring Service
  • Satisfactory evidence of eligibility to live and work in the UK
  • A satisfactory health questionnaire (only after an offer of employment has been made).
  • The satisfactory completion of a probationary period
  • Any additional checks that may be made if the successful applicant has lived abroad, in accordance with statutory guidance
