General outline of the role:

At specialist level:

To learn my clients Approach (through training and induction) and implement the approach (including assessment and direct intervention / therapy) effectively in mainstream schools

To implement traditional speech and language therapy to a high standard as appropriate

To effectively manage a caseload of pupils with SLC needs in a variety of different settings by using a range of clinical skills and as required by the company

At targeted level:

To provide TAs with adequate support and training to implement effective small group intervention.

At universal level:

To support schools to implement universal strategies to support children with speech, language and literacy needs across the curriculum. This may include formal and informal training, collaborative planning and delivering of mainstream lessons.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Pupil Related Activities

1. Adhere to national and local standards and guidelines relating to Professional Practice (Communicating Quality III), and maintain professional registration through the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and Health Professions Council.

2. To participate in training and induction provided by my client

3. Be aware of and adhere to current legislation including the new SEN Code of Practice (2014).

4. Be responsible for managing your own diary effectively and prioritising admin and case-loads.

5. Be responsible for your caseload at each school in terms of assessment and differential diagnosis; devising; delivering and evaluating programmes;contributing to IEPs, annual reviews, transition plans, EHCPs, making and following up appropriate referrals and seeking second opinions where appropriate

6. Provide traditional speech and language therapy as well as my clients Approach to identified mainstream pupils with speech, language, literacy and communication needs (SLCN)

7. To independently keep abreast of developments in the field of speech and language therapy through independent research

8. Be responsible for planning and administering a range of interventions, calling upon specialist staff for advice as appropriate.

9. Work autonomously but in collaborative (with school staff), intensive and innovative ways.

10. Be a reflective practitioner. Considering and evaluating alternative and innovative approaches to the management of pupils with literacy and SLCN, and participating in research and journal clubs.

11. Seek second opinions, and/or make referrals when necessary, according to school/local policy.

12. Seek opportunities to disseminate skills, knowledge and experience through training and offering advice to team members, other staff, parents, carers and significant others about individual and groups of pupils. Demonstrating practical procedures when appropriate.

13. Liaise and collaborate with staff (usually teachers and speech and language therapists) in other locations regarding individual pupils at transfer into and out of the school/service.

14. To actively promote safeguarding and the welfare of children & young persons.

15. Work with volunteers and assistants as appropriate, deploying time and allocating duties within the multidisciplinary team context.

16. Access support from colleagues, when necessary.

17. Attend and contribute to (school) staff meetings, Inset, coffee mornings and twilight sessions.

18. Contribute to the development and maintenance of effective joint working practices.

19. Contribute to developing and sustaining raised awareness of my client and their service within the school environment.

20. Make a positive contribution to team spirit and camaraderie.

21. To consistently deliver therapy that is to the best of your ability.

Personal Development

1. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the impact of SLCN on pupils learning, keeping abreast of relevant initiatives and development in the fields of Speech and Language Therapy and Education

2. Independently develop and/or maintain knowledge and competency in dealing with expressive, receptive and pragmatic language disorder as well as literacy difficulties in children and young people

3. Participate and contribute to one's own performance appraisal and supervision sessions

4. Maintain your own RCSLT CPD diary Duties related to my client
