Job Title: Leading Hand
Reporting to: Shift Engineer
Location: Newport

Purpose:

To provide a co-ordinating point of contact for the Shift Engineer in managing the Mechanical Craft Team members on shift. To deputise as required for the Shift Engineer and to reinforce standards and behaviours.

Additionally, to undertake the full range of Craft Team Member duties in your appropriate discipline and develop additional competences of yourself and the team, to produce efficient and rigorous professional standards of workmanship on shifts.

Working Hours: Shift pattern 2 days + 2 nights and 4 days off (12 hours)

Acorn is looking to recruit a Leading Hand for our prestigious client based in Newport.

Responsibilities:

• Undertaking maintenance, repair and fault - finding tasks as required as a fully working member of the team.
• Responsible on a shift basis for ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of plant and the safety of all shift members in his team by reinforcing the appropriate safe working practices, risk assessments and Safety Contacts.
• To identify and share with the team opportunities to improve the effectiveness of all aspects of engineering activity, with particular emphasis on fault finding and diagnostics, PCM, Shift Maintenance planning, full team flexibility and labour co-ordination.
• Makes basic decisions on routine maintenance, and permitry tasks, e.g. sequencing of work, co-ordination of resources, fully conversant and authorised in C.O.I’s, Elec App, ATW/PBs and communications with the relevant personnel.
• Ensures appropriate development, prioritisation and completion of the SAP maintenance jobs that need to be undertaken, while using various media to report activities as required by works area, ie maintenance sheets, lotus notes reports, rolling programs, etc
• Ensures the compliance with Corus Mech / Elect engineering standards, ensuring he and his team fully operate to them
• To deputise for the Shift Engineer and the other Senior Craft as appropriate and if requested. (Where this is for prolonged periods then suitable training will be provided)
• To assist where required in the development of materials and delivery of on the job learning, to raise individual and team skills / competency
• To develop, organise and maintain rigorous shift inspection routines
• Ensures provision of appropriate consumables and spares and equipment as required on shifts
• To communicate and record issues, progress and performance as required to the Shift Engineer, ensure shift handover occurs, and regular contact with fellow mechanical and production leading hands.
• To undertake the full range of normal duties associated with your designated role within the team.
• To undertake other duties as required and requested or anticipated, within your capability
• To co-ordinate / supervise the most effective deployment of Craft team members and support personnel including contractors as determined by plant requirements and priorities, in consultation with the Shift Engineer or Shift Manager.

Skills and Knowledge

• Fully competent in the range of Maintenance Craft skills in Mechanical disciplines and with a working knowledge of electrical disciplines.
• Capable of advising Shift Management and Section Leaders on plant capability, status and required maintenance intervention
• Demonstrable experience in all areas of the Plant including ancillary plant and service systems.
• Fully utilises SAP – inputs and updates the system and ensures it is being utilised effectively by you and the team. Ensures team are fully conversant with the system, directing and coaching on its application where necessary.
• Additionally, all Leading Hands will be able to demonstrate an aptitude for front-line leadership and co-ordination in the following areas:-
o Explaining and demonstrating working practices and required maintenance routines to Craft team members for the purposes of training and competence development and participating in development initiatives as required.
o Co-ordinating the team and giving direction on the priority activities required to be undertaken by them.
o Ensuring and Role-modelling health and safety compliance.
o Role-modelling of workplace standards and values to compliment the ethos of the Journey
o Ensuring that the Craft Team works to defined standards of workmanship and records plant condition and work undertaken accurately.
