The Electoral Commission is the independent body that regulates party and election finance, sets standards for well-run elections and encourages people to register to vote.

We are looking for an experienced public lawyer to join our dedicated legal team, working to support the delivery of the Commission’s objectives. You will be involved in a wide range of high quality legal work focusing primarily on supporting the regulatory and enforcement side of the Commission’s work.

Position: Lawyer
Location: Bunhill Row, London EC1 (Commutable from Watford, Croydon, Slough and surrounding areas)
Job Type: Full Time, Fixed Term Contract until 30th September 2018 with a possibility to extend
Salary: £51,945 per annum (36 hrs) or £41,555 per annum (28.8 hrs)

About the role:

The post-holder is required to undertake a wide range of internal legal work. This encompasses legal work relating to both electoral law and practice (including referendums) and political finance and regulation legal work. The post holder will also be required to provide data protection and freedom of information law advice, and other cross-Commission projects.


- Provide legal services and advice to the Commission and its staff across the breadth of the Commission’s functions in accordance with the standards set out in the User Guide and the Legal Procedures Manual
- Advise on queries allocated, exercising proper professional judgment and liaising with the Senior Lawyer where appropriate
- In consultation with the Head of Legal, the focus of activities and the lead responsibility for particular areas may change over time
- Ensure that advice given is risk based enabling the Commission to take into consideration identified risk before deciding on a course of action
- Advice both on the current law and, also in connection with possible reform and guidance on a wide range of issues including, registration of electors, supply and use of the electoral register, and the conduct of elections and challenge
- Advice on the law concerning the conduct of referendums including those for which the Chair of the Commission is or may be Chief Counting Officer
- Drafting regulations that may need to be made by the Commission; also scrutinising draft legislation and responding to consultation on legislation made by Government
- Assisting the Head of Legal with any legal challenges, including judicial review
- Undertake the conduct of polling place review appeals and prepare draft decisions
- Data Protection / Freedom of Information
- Deputise for the Senior Lawyer as needed
- Contribute to cross Commission projects and initiatives including attending relevant meetings and supporting the Head of Legal in leading any projects or initiatives that are owned by the Legal Team
- Understand, and actively promote, the aims and objectives of the Corporate Plan
- Ensure equality of opportunity is maintained and respected at all times in accordance with the appropriate policies and procedures
- Comply with the statutory provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

About you:

- Fully entitled to practice in England and Wales under the rules of the Law Society or Bar Council (or equivalent overseas qualifications from a comparable legal jurisdiction that would enable the same) and post qualification experience
- Experience of government (central or local) or related organisations with governmental type duties would be advantageous
- Strong legal analytical skills, sound legal knowledge-base and the ability confidently and effectively to interpret and apply new and complex legislation
- Knowledge of public law is desirable
