POSITION: Setter Operator

LOCATION: Barnstaple

SALARY: Upon Application


Position Objective

To set and operate a wide range of machines to maximum capacity and to produce goods of the highest quality.

Key Responsibilities

* Setting and operating machines following the established procedures and standard work Instructions.
* Setting and operating machines to optimum efficiency, ensuring regular checking of machine tooling and quality ensuring satisfaction of all quality standards and productivity standards.
* Through the use of SMED methodologies and team working activities improve changeover processes with a view to reducing changeover times.
* Training of colleagues in changeover techniques, methods and best practice,
* To work closely with support departments and other setters to develop and implement new technologies and methods; with a view to reducing overall operating cost and/ or increasing productivity.
* Through continuous review of machine operation to ensure all products manufactured meet the established quality standard.
* Read and follow instructions on drawings, routings, and ISO procedures so that the work produced meets requirements in terms of time and quality.
* Maintain a clean and tidy working environment to the company’s 5s standard so that the work area hazards are minimised, tooling and gauges etc. are protected and presentation meets the Company standard.
* Utilise all company provided personal protective equipment as well as other safety devices to ensure the job holder’s personal safety is maintained and that others are not jeopardised by their actions.
* Cooperate fully with the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental programmes to ensure compliance at all times and that safe working practices are followed.
* Ensures effective handover to next shift especially where this involves the night shift or weekend shift in order that they can continue effective manufacturing.
* Will train other Operators in the use of the machines, safety equipment and product.
* Undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required for the effective operation of the business
* Demonstrate effective Leadership of HPT members

* You will take an active and lead role within the HPT regarding quality and productivity.

Skills and Knowledge

* Complete understanding of products, part numbers, routings, drawings, structures, procedures etc, enabling consistent quality parts to be produced
* Working knowledge of machines – speed / tools / change of tool required
* Able to meet quality standard through review of machines and set up
* Ability to change full range of tools on machines
* Demonstrates an ability to grind and sharpen drills and part offs when necessary
* Training in product within designated work area
* Ability to set all machines within the assigned work area
* Ability to work with other team members including leading / managing work

Qualifications and Experience

* Ideally a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or NVQ III
* Typically a minimum 2 years experience, at Level 3 Setter/Operator
* Numerate, able to follow written instructions and have reasonable literacy skills.


The jobholder forms part of a team who will regularly work days, double days, permanent night shift or Weekend Shift. Some flexibility between shifts may be required as well as the availability to work some additional hours to meet exceptional customer demand for product or train outside of normal production times.
