Main Purpose and
Nature of the Job
The Systems Infrastructure Engineer’s role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimising all hardware, operating systems, third party applications and processes. The Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximise the benefit of IT systems investments.

Essential Technical Skills & Experience

• Active Directory and Group Policy
• MS Exchange 2010 onwards
• In-depth knowledge Windows Server OS 2003 onwards
• VMWare vSphere 5.0 onwards
• Intel Server Hardware (HP Rack & Blade particularly)
• Hosted environments with DMZ’s and Website Security considerations
• Data Centre / Server Room Environment
• LAN & WAN network experience
Desirable Technical Skills & Experience
• Microsoft TMG
• Desktop OS Windows XP onwards
• McAfee EPO
• Cisco Switches and Firewall’s
• Disaster Recovery planning and testing

Key Duties:

Operational Systems Management
• Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
• Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to system programmer and development teams.
• Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company’s disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
• Integrate servers, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems.
• Ensure system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and other applications.
• Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
• Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
• Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
• Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports.
• Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.

Project Planning (large or small projects)

• Designing and costing the end solution(s)
• Documenting and proposing options to management
• Planning step by step the actions and tasks to be completed
• Attend planning meetings
• Documenting the tasks and actions with timescales for completion
• Working with other team members to complete relevant projects and associated tasks

Additional Duties:

• On call availability on a rota basis for provision of out of hours systems support cover.
• Occasional evening and weekend work on systems that cannot be brought down during normal or business critical hours (there is a regular maintenance window on Sunday evenings).
• Travel to UK Sites


• Proven experience installing hardware, operating systems, applications, and related products in data centre / server room environments is highly advantageous to this role.
o Windows Server & Desktop OS and Windows related infrastructure software.
o Active directory, group policy and locking down user security.
o Intel Server Hardware.
o Backup products (ideally Netvault).
o Antivirus products (ideally Mcafee Total End Point or Sophos).
o Cisco Routers/Firewalls.
• Working technical knowledge of current software protocols, Internet standards, website security and best practices.
• Excellent hardware, software and network troubleshooting experience.
• Extensive application support experience with MS Office, Outlook and anti-virus products
• Experience installing Cisco switches and firewalls, creating VPN’s and maintaining access control lists.
• Working knowledge of server and PC operating systems
• Experience using a help desk application for managing tasks and workloads.
• Experience dealing with 3rd party suppliers and support organisations.
• Understanding of data privacy practices and laws.
• Ability to maintain priorities, schedules and task lists.
• Experience of project leadership relating to essential technologies for this position

Core Competencies

• Previous experience being involved in projects relating to at least two of the above Key Technical Skills.
• The ability to plan a whole task, document and execute it (or document it such that someone else can execute it). Also to integrate infrastructural plans within larger pieces of work.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
• Technically adept – you will have the ability to quickly obtain knowledge on unfamiliar products and applications by learning ‘hands-on’
• Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products using own initiative.
• Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Able to prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
• Car driver – willingness to travel as required.

Contact with Others
Collaborate with other infrastructure and support staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
Work with the Sales, project management and other technology teams as required on new projects and implementations.
Work with executive team members, decision makers and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.
