Our client is the UK’s leader in anaerobic digestion (AD) and one of the largest independent AD operators in the UK. Having recently expanded its food waste recycling network through acquisition, it has a combined network of thirteen AD plants and six composting sites located across England, Scotland and Wales that provide cost-effective, low carbon, food and organic waste management solutions. Working with supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and local authorities across the UK, the AD sites recycle over half a million tonnes of food waste each year.

Now is an exciting time to join them in this new opportunity for a Plant Engineer.

Position: Plant Engineer
Location: Twinwoods, Bedfordshire
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday and weekends 1 in 3
Salary: max £35k per annum + allowance + overtime + Bonus
Benefits: 25 days pa, increasing to max 27 days; 3% employer & employee pension

About the role:

As the Plant Engineer you will deputise for the General Manager, assisting in running the AD plant and sharing out of hours cover; co-ordinating and carrying out maintenance (planned and breakdowns); lead the Planned Preventative Maintenance System; work with and support the General Manager in maximising cost effective and efficient output; and continuously improving safety, health, environmental and operational standards and systems.


- Assist the General Manager and act as the deputy with all site operations, “hands-on” as appropriate, ensuring it is run to optimum capacity maximising performance with full regard to safety, health and the environment
- Provide cover for the General Manager in remote monitoring of the site performance as required to maintain safe and efficient performance
- Assist in the development of and adherence to Safe Systems of Work and Operating Instructions
- Work with the General Manager to drive site maintenance, (planned overhauls, calibrations, alarm & trip checks, breakdowns as well as development work), directing the activities of the plant team and specialist contractors
- Manage the site’s Planned Preventative Maintenance program, ensuring routine checking, monitoring, servicing and repair of the plant and equipment are done in a timely fashion to an acceptable standard
- Work with Operations Team management in developing a list of approved contractors and monitor their performance
- Support the General Manager in monitoring & controlling costs and revenue against budget
- Assist in the strict compliance with the Environmental Permit and Animal By-Products Regulations; Ensure daily plant checks are effectively carried out & remedial action taken promptly
- Ensure OEE data for the CHPs and Pasteurisers are reported to the General Manager and all shortfall from Maximum Proven Rate are accurately assigned
- Highlight any site performance concerns to the General Manager
- Provide cover at other sites as and when required

About you:

- Engineering ability and experience required, control & electrical or mechanical skills
- Qualified in electrical or mechanical engineering or similar or qualified by experience in engineering
- WAMITAB (covering biological treatment) Certificate of Technical Competence
- NEBOSH safety qualifications (General Certificate)
- Qualification or experience in materials handling, confined spaces, working at heights, first aid and banksman duties is desirable
- Ability to operate a fork lift truck and obtain a fork lift truck licence
- Full Driving licence
- Relevant Experience an advantage
