Position: Senior SQL Database Administrator
Location: Manchester
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Salary: £50,000 to £55,000 per annum dependent on experience

About the role:

The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for providing technical support for the database environment including overseeing the development and organisation of the databases, performance tuning, assessment and implementation of new technologies and providing a long-term perspective on the relationship of database technology to the business. It is extremely important to our client that on-line processing database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible.

The Senior DBA will need to work closely with all the teams within Technology Services to provide support, maintenance and updates as a result of Service Desk calls, planned maintenance or planned updates and software releases.


- Introduce structured methods for database design; involved in design approval process.
- Carryout data analysis, suggest and deliver optimisation.
- Develop an Enterprise Data Model.
- Actively involved in data integration decisions, including replication and migration.
- Create and maintain a data dictionary in collaboration with the Data Management team.
- Involvement in delivering and adhering to data classification / retention policies.
- Maintenance of all SQL Server instances and databases across the live, test and DR environments.
- Performance testing and approval of all SQL Scripts to be run against the SQL Server instances, as part of the change management process.
- Ensure database availability and performance is within internal and external SLAs.
- Actively monitor the servers and their performance.
- Independently create, test and implement database modification scripts.
- Independently investigate and resolve database issues with both In-House and Third-Party applications. Perform database upgrades.
- Apply Third Party upgrade and service packs.
- Establish and maintain appropriate end-user database access control levels.
- Ensure backup operations are successful.
- Capacity and architecture planning.
- Test and implement data fixes for Service Desk calls assigned to the DBA team.
- Involvement with the Enterprise Architecture Team to suggest, plan and implement future database architectures.
- Ensure the disaster recovery environment is up to date at all times.
- Carry out disaster recovery tests to prove the recovery model works.

About you:

- 5 years+ experience Microsoft SQL Server (certification an advantage).
- 3 years+ experience database structures, theories, principles, and practices (certification an advantage).
- Advanced SQL Server clustering.

Desired knowledge / skills:

- Server-client computing and relational database environments.
- Replication methods for DR situations.
- SQL and Stored procedures.
- Performance tuning of SQL Server databases.
- Reporting, query tools and practices.
- Technical documentation.
- Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail. Team-oriented, collaborative.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Flexibility; able to support environment out of normal working hours.
- NoSQL databases.
- Sybase ASE & Replication Server.
- SharePoint setup and configuration.
