We are seeking a Linux technical specialist to help support the client’s Linux systems. This is a fantastic opportunity for a Linux administrator with demonstrable commercial experience with Red Hat Linux in a mixed Linux/Windows environment. Certification is not required. The remuneration package is such that the successful candidate could earn up to £55k plus an excellent pension.

Detailed Description

The jobholder will work as part of a team to support the client’s Linux-based systems. The jobholder is likely to be involved in the following activities:

  • Support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems (RHEL 5, 6 & 7) in both physical and virtual environments including patching and security controls
  • Will be key to the running of several critical services and maintaining a gold service
  • Maintain and develop scripts for automated configuration management, monitoring, and batch
  • Provide support for JBoss EAP running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Provide support of Puppet for configuration management in the Linux environment
  • Provide support of RHN Satellite for server builds and patching;
  • Work with BMC Control-M for scheduling of Jobs
  • Work with Tripwire for audit and compliance
  • Provide recommendations for improving the current operational processes and procedures
  • Participate in out-of-hours support for Linux systems
  • Maintaining Linux systems in line with security policies, including patching

Job Requirements


  • Experience of managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux production systems running RHEL 5, 6 & 7
  • Experience of using scripting to automate tasks
  • Planning and prioritising, analytical thinking
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience of working within the ITIL framework
  • Experience of managing systems with RHN Satellite


  • Recent experience with JBoss
  • Experience of using VMware as a virtualisation platform for Linux guests
  • Linux performance tuning skills
  • Experience of Kerberos, especially with regard to securing applications running on Linux
  • Experience with configuring Linux systems for use with Oracle RDBMS
  • Experience with Control-M
  • Experience with Tripwire
  • Exposure to use of Linux as a platform to host to “big data” platforms such as Hadoop
