Aeronautical Engineering Apprentice (Surface Finishing)

RAF Culdrose - Cornwall, Helston

36 to 42 months Contract

38 hours per week - Monday to Friday - 8:30am to 5:00pm

£192 per week

A wide range of aviation and engineering support activities are carried out at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.


Under contract to the MoD and leading companies such as Augusta Westland 250 employed engineers carry out depth maintenance as part of a team working on Royal Navy Merlin Helicopters. A wide range of Mechanical tasks on equipment and systems is undertaken.

Main Duties:

Under contract to the Ministry of Defence and leading companies such as Augusta Westland over 250 engineers are employed to carry out depth maintenance as part of a team working on Royal Navy Merlin Helicopters.

  • Undertake a range of technical work, towards aircraft Composite material maintenance and repair.
  • Comply with all Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental and Aviation safety requirements.
  • Naval Air Publications and Compound Interactive Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (CIETP)
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations
  • Tool Control and Quality Practices.

  • English and a Science subject Grade A - C

Training to be provided:

NVQ level 3 Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (Surface Finishing) – no college attendance required

Tech Cert L3, 120 credit diploma in Aeronautical Engineering

L2 Performing Engineering Operations

Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT, as required – no college attendance required

Specific features:

You will also need to complete an initial assessment, which will help us guide you to the most appropriate programme to meet your needs.

Things to consider:

You must be able to travel to RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall on a daily basis.

You may be required to live away from home for periods whilst at College studying for your National Technical Certificate or it may be a local College on day release. If so Serco will cover costs in accordance with Company guidelines.

You must not be colour blind - proof will be required that you are at least Colour Perception (CP) 2 (obtainable from any optician).

As we are located on a military establishment, you will be required to undergo the full Ministry of Defence security checks, which includes a check of criminal records.

Working within a Surface Finishing repair facility brings with it the requirement for extra health monitoring through Serco Occupational Health.
