Rural Teaching and Community Work in Tanzania
Zanzibar is an undisputed paradise so it’s no surprise that it attracts a large number of tourists. With tourism increasing, many jobs are geared towards the booming industry. With poor literacy levels and lack of training in the local community, jobs in the tourism industry are taken by people from other parts of Africa who have a higher level of training and English-speaking skills.
As a volunteer you will work with a number of different institutions where you will be volunteering on a combination of different activities. Placements range from pre-schools, primary and secondary schools supporting local teachers in educating and playing with children, as there are often too many children for the small amount of staff. You can also get involved with teaching not only English, but also computer and life skills to adults at the local tourism training institute, helping them get work. You may also have the chance to get involved with the local beach and marine conservation program. The focus of your project will depend on the time of year you visit and the school holidays, but there is plenty of work all year round.
There are no specific qualifications required; however experience or study background in Education or other relevant subjects are welcome. Project fees include; accommodation, airport pick-ups, food, orientation and 24h support.
