The Medway Queen Preservation Society is based in the Medway area of Kent, but draws support from all around the world. It’s a volunteer led society, but employs professionals for the rebuild of the ship. The society's aim is to restore the ship, bring her back to working condition. With the support of the EU Regional Development Fund, and the Heritage Lottery Fund, MQPS has set up an apprentice training workshop where the restoration will be completed. The rebuild of the ship's hull is being done in David Abels dry dock, right next to the SS Great Britain.

The charity owns the historic paddle steamer 'Medway Queen’. The charity was set up to purchase, restore and operate the ship. They have set up a training workshop and visitor centre at Gillingham. The charity benefits young people and the socially disadvantaged receiving training, and benefits maritime heritage and the public at large through the visitor centre.

• Restoration and preservation of the Medway Queen, which has just undergone a full structural rebuild using traditional shipbuilding techniques in Bristol.
• Creation of apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
• Operation of a visitor centre at Gillingham, where the public will soon have the opportunity to visit the ship under restoration.

Job Description
The charity is looking for a Treasurer who will have responsibility for the financial management of the organisation. The treasurer will be playing a major role in the development of the following applications especially with regards to funding in 2015 and beyond.
• the hull rebuild in Bristol was largely paid by the Heritage Lottery Fund
• the training workshops at Gillingham were co-financed by the European Union Regional Development Fund
While routine services and accounting functions will be carried out by the full time project administrator and professional accountants, the Treasurer will however be responsible to ensure the following duties and responsibilities are getting executed in an efficient manner:

• Ensure proper systems for budgeting, financial control and reporting are in place
• Procedures to reduce risk of fraud
• Inform all trustees regarding the state of finances
• Present financial reports trustees in a comprehensive manner and enable discussions on it
• Ensure accounts and financial reports are produced in time and according to the charity commission guidelines
• Any other duties and responsibilities which are unique to the charity

Person Description
• Good numeracy and business experience.
• Enthusiasm for maritime heritage and apprentice training.
• Ability to talk the same language as accountants and to translate into English for non-accountants.
• Professional accounting qualification desirable.
• French language is not essential however if the candidate can speak the language then it would be ideal

Time commitment
There are monthly management committee meetings at Gillingham.  The auditors and accountants are in Ashford but liaison work is unlikely to require more than one or two meetings a year. It can be helpful to visit the workshops more than once per month. Minimum commitment is to attend management committee meetings, which are usually on the third Monday each month from 1100 to 1300. Communication will mostly be carried out via emails.
