With System People Education you can work and study to gain a Childcare qualification which will assist you gain a permanent role in Early Years upon graduation. Our Childcare Apprenticeships are 12 months in length and involve you completing a 12 month work placement in a local Nursery, in addition to attending classroom based learning delivered by a specialist Childcare Tutor.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for one of our exciting Nursery Apprenticeship placements you will be keen to begin an appropriate qualification this September to gain knowledge and understanding of the pre-school child and what it takes to work in a Nursery. This will be a Level 2 or Level 3 Childcare qualification.

You will ideally hold a Level 2 or above in Maths and English. If you do not hold a Level 2 in these subjects then assistance can be provided via a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification alongside your childcare qualification. This will be discussed at interview stage.

You will need a passion and desire to work with Children.

What is it like working as a Nursery Apprentice?

Nurseries are interesting and unique places, they can be busy, noisy, fun and challenging. A typical day in a nursery is marked by a regular set of tasks and duties which change over the course of the weeks/months but on the main follow a routine. This routine includes set meal times, nap times and indoor and outdoor play times. In addition to supporting the Children's routine you will be supporting senior staff with creating engaging and fun display boards, organising classroom props/toys and supporting with any paperwork and administration such as children diary's and uploading learning to the online learning logs.

The majority of the job day to day will be to assist the nursery staff and wider team to ensuring that the babies and children are provided with a varied curriculum, with new challenges, with a commitment to ongoing improvements. Most of all that they are well cared for and have some fun while learning! You will be expected to assist with lesson planning and ideas for new creative learning to ensure that babies and children are progressing well as their time in the nursery continues.

As part of a typical day you will be expected to assist with the general domestic upkeep of the nursery in addition to the care of equipment. It is important that you report any broken equipment, toys and books for repair and keep a look out for any potential accidents. Keeping babies and children safe is of the upmost importance so ensuring their safety and security is key. You will be shown the security and safety practices in the nursery when you are placed.

You will be provided with a uniform and it is expected that you will present a professional image during nursery hours as your work appearance and conduct reflects on the Nursery you are placed with.

The National Minimum Wage for an apprentice rises to £3.70 an hour from the 1st of April 2018. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.90 an hour for 18-20 year olds; £7.38 for anyone aged 21 to 24 and £7.83 for those over 25.
