Lead Project Planner


Job Description and Skills

To lead the provision of professional planning support & analysis to business sectors and business winning. To manage internal projects and change initiatives. Reporting to Head of Planning and Resource Management

Key Responsibility / Accountabilities

  • Provide professional planning support to bids
  • Provision of professional planning and control to business areas
  • Act as prime internal change facilitator for Project Office & encourage continuous development of people and processes
  • Management of Project Office support staff as required allowing efficient operating and reporting of the sector performance.
  • Implementation of tools and processes consistently across the business sector
  • Manage and communicate issues to senior management
  • Mentor less experienced members
  • Performance management of project office staff as required
  • Champion outstanding customer service
  • Deliver agreed performance targets

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

Knowledge and Experience

  • Substantial project planning experience
  • Familiar with all aspects of project management
  • Able to manage in a matrix environment
  • Good grasp of Risk and Earned Value Management
  • Proven track record managing teams of professional planners
  • Style and Skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to challenge and present at Senior Management level
  • Personal presence and credibility
  • Commercially aware
  • Excellent planning/project management skills
  • Motivational and creative individual
  • Innovative
  • Team player
  • Significant experience in a similar role
  • Impressive track record in planning large or complex programmes
  • Creative Thinker
  • Security cleared (Although time will be given at offer stage to gain Security Clearance.

Desirable Skill

  • Knowledge of modern integrated business systems (SAP ,ERP)
  • Experience gained in Defence, Aerospace, or Space


  • Educated to a degree level (or equivalent) / Flexibility for the right type of individual
  • Experience gained in an associated technical discipline organisation

Intrinsic Factors

  • Working in an open plan office environment.
  • Working as part of IPT (integrated project team).
  • Working to tight deadlines.
  • Occasional (monthly or less) travel to other Leonardo sites.
  • Display screen equipment user.
