John Crane in Manchester is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the company on a permanent basis.

The appointee will be responsible for performing a variety of engineering and design tasks requiring the application of standard techniques and procedures on John Crane’s wet seals and fluid control products. The role is also likely to involve close collaboration with commercial/customer facing teams either for point solutions or to support strategic project proposals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Review & processing of Application Requests; Strategic engineering support for major projects; New product development projects Project sales/engineering liaison; Following standard techniques and procedures, select / apply standard or special products to meet customers' needs, including seals, fluid control products, couplings, filters, bearings; Generation of engineering proposals / specifications for standard or special products, including determining cost-effective materials for production; Advanced Seal calculations (including leakage calculations, heat generation, balance temp, flow rates etc.); Advanced use of CSTEDY & similar tools for in-depth design analysis, including approval of others’ basic CSTEDY reports; Fluid control calculations as required; In-depth field troubleshooting, including analysis of problems / recommendation & implementation of appropriate solutions, lead meetings with customers in plant or at customer’s site to resolve satisfactorily; Detailed failure analysis activities, including full investigation / reporting / resolution with customer with necessary commercial awareness; Detailed technical presentations to customers in order to support sales; Deliver detailed technical training externally to customers as required; Manage and report personal workload, forecast job lead-times to meet customer and departmental objectives.

Required Skills and Experience:

    Ideally University Degree in a related field (Mechanical Engineering, Process / Chemical Engineering), HNC/HND will also be considered; Experience in a similar role, within a commercial engineering environment, with the ability to work on engineering proposals, specifications, calculations, customer support and failure analysis. Ideally 2D / 3D CAD experience; An asset - previous experience with Rotating Equipment / related components; Customer-focused and resource oriented; Ability to deliver to deadlines and targets; An innovative individual with attention to detail.
