About the company

This North London Local Authority has three core goals where if delivered, will undoubtedly contribute to a better quality of life for the residents of the Borough. Firstly, they believe in fairness for all, whether that be by tacking inequality, protecting the vulnerable, providing education and support to young people or simply by making services and opportunities accessible to those who need it. Secondly, they wish to deliver a period of growth and sustainability to the region by taking advantage of the upturn in the London and national economy with their ambitious plans for improved transport and regeneration of the most deprived areas. Finally, they are passionate about building strong communities, as they want the Borough to be a place where residents are proud to live, where people from all backgrounds are welcomed and where people actively participate in their communities.

The role

As a Principal Housing Enforcement Officer within the Private Sector Housing team, you will be tasked with investigating complaints surrounding poor housing conditions across the Council's portfolio of housing stock. You will conduct both proactive and reactive inspections of HMO's, identifying states of disrepair and other hazards using the Housing, Health and Safety Rating System. In cases of non-compliance, you will be responsible for using appropriate licensing and enforcement powers to ultimately bring the properties up to statuary and council standards. If required, you will assist in preparing prosecution papers and give evidence at Magistrates Court.

Ideally you will have a degree in Environmental Health and be registered member of the EHRB, however this is not essential. You will have worked in a similar capacity at either a Local Authority or County Council dealing with rogue landlords and issues surrounding Private Sector housing. It is crucial that you have an excellent understanding of the regulatory framework, guidance and good practice in relation to the Housing Act and HHSRS assessments. Prior experience of carrying out proactive work especially the registration and licensing of privately rented houses and Houses in Multiple Occupation is essential.

You will receive a generous hourly rate of up to £32.50 per hour and the contract that is initially expected to run for a minimum of 3 months.
