Role : Vector Upstream Development Group Leader

Location : Didcot, Oxfordshire

Salary Banding : £42,000 - £80,000

Primary Responsibilities: The role is to lead the upstream lentiviral vector process development and optimization activities in the Process Development group. The purpose of this role is to create a central point of contact to provide upstream development leadership within the wider vector development team. The role is a collaborative one, working closely with the downstream and in-process analytical technical leads internally and also to act as a technical interface to our CMOs and development partners. Furthermore the role will be expected to contribute to planning of the bioprocessing aspect of vector upstream development in addition to working collaboratively with the vector development, MS&T and Quality groups.

Key Responsibilities:

- Leadership of the of the upstream development function within the vector development function
- Provide technical review of experimental designs, results, conclusions and the process development plans of the upstream development function within the vector development function
- Drive increased process optimisation, process understanding and decreased COGS
- Contribute to the tech transfer of new and updated processes to our internal and external vector facilities, collaborating with the upstream, MS&T and Quality technical lead to ensure success
- Manage any outsourced development activities for vector upstream bioprocessing with subcontractors, collaborating with the downstream, in-process analytical, MS&T and Quality technical leads as appropriate

Qualifications and Experience Required:

- BSc or higher qualification in relevant area.
- Experience with upstream bioprocess development in the gene therapy, vaccine and/or biopharmaceutical fields, proven relevant industrial experience is required
- A depth of experience in the process development, optimization, scale-up and technology transfer of upstream bioprocesses
- A deep understanding of technologies suitable for scale-up of upstream bioprocesses including bioreactors (suspension or adherent based cell culture) is required.
- Significant knowledge and experience of the scale-up and scale-down of upstream unit operations, upstream process characterisation to define critical process parameters through a failure mode and effect analysis
- An in-depth understanding of tech transfer and GMP translation to include the technical review of documentation such as process descriptions, sampling plans and batch records.
- Experience of in-plant presence during tech transfer would also be desirable.
- Previous experience in management of a small team
